Holy Smokes!!! I sure didn't see that one coming but I'll sure as hell take it! What an awesome starting lineup - Halladay, Lee, Oswalt, Hammels...it doesn't get any better than that. And to think Lee passed up an extra 20M that was offered by the Yankees. Man oh man they must be pissed. From the sports news this morning they're saying that he really liked playing here in Philly & his wife also really liked the area as a few good reasons he's back. Sometimes money isn't everything. This should be one hell of a season coming up. Can't wait!!

Awww, snap! Beat me by 2 minutes!
Yeah, all the stuff he liked and the fact that the Phillies have a better chance of getting back to the World Series this year than the Yankees do. He wants a ring. He said it himself. He's gonna take the $20M hit for the chance to get it.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

I'm sure you could buy your own ring for $20M
The Phillies will be fun to watch this year.. -
WooHoo! That's awesome! Let's not forget though that lack of offense when it counted, not pitching, did them in last year. Let's hope they get their act together & become the complete package they're capable of being.

I did not see that coming either. Phillies are gonna be tough next year. I am glad to see he did not end up in Pinstripes.

You're from Pittsburgh. It's not worth thinking about baseball in the summertime either.

We had a team but they were last seen in 1992 when Barry Bonds could not throw out slow footed Sid Bream.

Unbelievable!
Just read this from mlbtraderumors.comPedro Martinez Is "Most Likely" Finished
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 15, 2010 at 3:35pm CST]
3:35pm: Martinez sounded far from returning in an interview with Justo de la Cruz at the Domincan paper El Dia today (links in Spanish), saying he's very happy to be away from the stress and travel of a player's life, which is to say, "I'm realizing what it is to be a normal person." An expanded version of the interview in the Puerto Rican paper Primera Hora further lowered expectations of a return in 2011, as Martinez added, "It's most likely that I don't return to active baseball... but honestly I don't know if I'll definitively announce my retirement." ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas pegged Martinez's odds of returning at 30% in a tweet this morning, but in light of the pitcher's quotes even that seems optimistic. - Nick Collias
8:29am: The Phillies havent ruled out adding a third Cy Young Award winner to a rotation that already includes Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay. Philadelphia GM Ruben Amaro Jr. inquired about Pedro Martinezs availability at last week's Winter Meetings, according to Christian Red of the New York Daily News. Its unclear whether the Phils are seriously interested in the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Martinez, now 39, said at David Ortizs celebrity golf tournament that hes open to pitching in 2011. He missed the 2010 season, but didnt rule out a return to the major leagues. Back in 2009, the right-hander joined the Phillies for part of the season and posted a 3.63 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 in 44 2/3 innings.
That's the same story he gave the Phillies when they signed him for a 1 year deal in 2009. Everybody said then that he wasn't gonna come out of retirement but Ruben got him to replace Moyer when Moyer got injured. Martinez would likely be a back-up if he did play but they could get limited mileage out of him with that pitching lineup they have. Martinez had nothing but good things to say about the Phillies and the Phans and strong admiration for Charlie.
If he signs, the Phillies will have 3 Cy Young winners available for starting rotation and probably 5 of the best pitchers in the game. If Martinez signs for 2011, I cannot recall ever seeing a pitching staff with this level of depth. All 5 have been all stars, most multiple times. The Phillies also have three consistent relievers in Madsen, Kendrick and Contreras and one of the best closers in the game in Brad Lidge. It's an insane pitching staff already and adding Martinez would just be icing on a sweet, sweet cake!Expert Moron Extraordinaire
