Laptop to TV connection

I have hooked up my laptop to the TV a number of times. But the last couple of times, all I can get onto the TV screen is the desktop and not anything in the browser....like the streaming episodes of Lie to Me....I toggle through all of the monitor options and still no luck.

Ideas? Thanks.

    whats the connection? vga, dvi-to-hdmi? could be multiple problems... one thing to do is to check if the videocard is simply extending the desktop on to the tv in which case you will get a blank portion of your desktop stretching onto your tv. Make sure you switch the adapter to do a "mirror" which would then fix your issue.

    s-video to s-video....right now, I am sicker than ****.....I will do some more troubleshooting when my brain is functioning again.....thanks....
