I have been visiting this forum for a couple of years but this is my first post. I had these speakers for a year and have been very happy with them specially now that I just got a new amp last week. Its an Onkyo HTRC180. Before this I had an 12 year old Kenwood, very basic amp and I used it to run the speaker for a year. I knew I had a problem with the left speaker but I thought I could be the old kenwood. Of course I still had the problem with the new Onkyo so I investigated and found my left tweeter not working and I just got the replacement.
On the pictures the tweeter on the left is the new one.
Look at the right one (old), It looks much lesser quality and the back numbers are all scratched. Some one pointed out that the black plastic on the back of the old tweeter looks melted.
I installed the new tweeter now the left side sounds better than the right. I hope I can get the other tweeter replaced too. I just sent the request and hope I hear from them on Monday.
Just wanted to share what found.

I dont think the tweeter is bad, just looks like the material they used to seal it is different (one looks bubbly and not as clean while the other looks nicer) They might not replace it if the tweeter still works but I undestand now it might bother you.

if that tweeter got hot enough to actually melt that material, it would have fried long ago (stopped working), so I really dont think that is it.

either way, you checkd with Polk so keep us posted as to what they say, if they dont send a new one i wouldn't lose sleep, i see diferent looking material like that on tweeters, especially replacements.

ha ha... So that is what happened. That old Kenwood amps was maybe 50W per channel and I played it pretty loud several times to the point that the amp would just shut down and I had to wait a few minutes and it would start playing again. Family gatherings can get pretty loud. Just to be clear that bad tweeter did not work at all. The one that still works doesn't sound as good as the new one.

Clipping and overdriving your amps like that is a great way to destroy your equipment...

That's two of these threads over the weekend. There's gonna be some deaf people in a few years.

BTW, when you read the power rating for speakers it means clean undistorted power, not turn it up to 11 and party.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

It is a very good way to blow speakers no matter what they are in.

By "in" I mean home audio, home theater, car, boat, ATV's or whatever.

Hey guy, I have the same pair of Monitor 70s and 40. Driven from the start by HK with tons of headroom. All but one of these are gone. These just cheap chinese made crap tweeters. I have had to order more unless I manufacture the plate thats hold the tweeter. If I had more time I would order a better quality tweeter, I feel like I am throwing good money after bad. I have a pair of polk 5jr 20250 since 1984 they still run great. Look, when you see towers selling for 150 to 200 dollars know you and I both just bought some cheapee speakes that are gonna look a lot better than they will ever sound, but hey. should give you years of play. It sucks. Polk has gone to hell and china. sorry man. Save tha cabinets and replace with the best consumer rated stuff. polk name ment somthing twenty years ago. Now it means nothin anymore. customer service is slow.

afo, been ruminating on that post for 2 years, waiting for someone to start a Monitor 70 thread so you could pounce?

You'd be hard pressed to find any post here that has anything but the best things to say about Polk customer service--However, you do need to call rather than email.

In any case, welcome to CP, two years after your join date.

You say - If I had more time I would order a better quality tweeter, I feel like I am throwing good money after bad.

So it takes longer to order a "better quality" tweeter:confused::rolleyes:

Start on it now...take your time...push the order button in about 20 years. Install them and I promise that they will last until you turn your system on:cool:

I have been in the same boat a time or 2, and it was always my fault, typically from underpower and too much right rotation of loud knob....

I have been running my monitor 70's for over two years now and I have never had a problem with my tweeters...

And I have turned them up pretty loud... I have powered them through my denon 2808 and hk 3490.
