The Battleship platform may not be so obsolete after all:eek:.
I'd love to see the NJ, and the Wisconsin cruising around again.
For those that have never seen an Iowa class up close and in person, it's awe inspiring. Pic's and video just don't do it justice

Wow wee that's impressive. Too bad we have to wait another 15 years for it to become practical . . . by then it may be obsolete.

The mission of the Battleship is definitely not obsolete. This is the short term replacement for that role. Unfortunately, like many weapon systems, the funding has been severely cut and the number of ships being produced has been sliced from 11 to 3 due to the cost of the two wars we are currently fighting.

A crew of only 142 and guns with a range of 100 nm. Stealth capabilities also. Pretty Bad A$$ platform! -

I'll second that. I got to work on the USS Iowa back in the 80's as a defense contractor in Norfolk, VA. I still remeber getting a chill walking up the gangplank which was decorated with banners that read "The Big Stick is Back !". Truly something I will never forget and impressive to say the least. The Iowa, the New Jersey, the Misoouri and the Wisconsin they don't build them like that anymore. -
I would think that this new weapon would be better suited for use in space.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t

You wouldn't have to worry about projectile deformation or velocity loss because of friction...

How did you guys get onto battleships from an article on rail guns? Any boat can have these weapons. That, along with the speed, is the benefit.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes
Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables
Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers

Unfortunately not all ships can have rail guns. They lack the electrical power to rapidly recharge the capacitor banks for a rapid fire rate. The Zumwalt class destroyer was designed with this capacity in mind with huge power generating capabilities and all electric propulsion (Main Engines). Even this is limited so may require shifting power from Main Engines to Weapons or power allocation somewhat similar to Star Trek and charging the phaser banks. Rail guns utilize massive capacitor banks for the rapid power discharge when fired.
The only Navy Ship that is called a boat is a Submarine. -

An actual war-able railgun would not be obsolete in 15 years. No one that we no of is any closer to having an operational version of any level. Additionally, we've been using combustion propelled projectiles for over a century without that becoming obsolete.design is where science and art break even. -
Surfacecraft has their purpose, the silent service out dose them all...Some final words,

you're going to have headaches."

I would like to see how they could use electrically fired weapons on a diesel ship.
Cool nonetheless. -
Is this thread about guns? I thought that was against the rules._________________________________________________
