You all have seen or at least know of Mike Rowe.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_rowe

Whether it was on a soap opera, QVC, as a Ford spokesman, a Lee Jeans spokesman and several others as well as what he's most famous for, the host of "Dirty Jobs" on the Discovery Channel.

Well, unlike other celebrities who stand at a pulpit and run their mouths about causes they think we should believe in, Mike Rowe is one of those few who will not preach to you about it but rather, he goes and does something about it. An admirable trait in any man (or woman for that matter). Well, in his spare time, Mike is becoming quite well known as a "Trade Activist". What's that? Well, Mike, along with many other people in this country, feel that valuable, skilled jobs are leaving this country and become scarce, for many reasons of course. Well, Mike has decided not to **** and whine about it and instead started a website called "Mike Rowe Works" to help do something about it.

http://www.mikeroweworks.com/

This website is his avenue for promoting the causes he believes in. By promoting, I don't mean it's a pile of links he thinks you should go to. I mean he is actively using his site as not only a blog but a search engine for finding stuff specific to his adopted causes, finding actual jobs, providing avenues for helping out yourself and in lieu of that, providing financial support of any kind. He even donates portions of the proceeds he makes from selling paraphernalia to his causes. They range from a variety of trade organizations to the Boy Scouts to programs that actually help troops by providing assistance with things like lawn care and home maintenance while they are off doing what their country has asked them to do.

Mike doesn't seem to make much from these ventures and alot of his promotion seems to be word of mouth. If you've seen anything from Mike Rowe, especially candid interviews, you know this is a stand-up guy with good intentions and truckloads of character. Whether you support his site and his causes or not, I'm not worried about. What I'm askin' is that you tell someone you know about this stuff. Get the word out because there is more good stuff coming out of this effort than you can shake a stick at and it needs to be shared. Even if it's just to show others an example of what effective activism is.

So go take a look and tell a person, or two or many about it and get the word out. It's worth the time.

I am not sure about Opera but he does sing Barbershop. He belonged or belongs to the Dundalk MD chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He also had a studder when he was young.

Seems like a real stand up guy.

    I like Mike!

Thanks John. I learned of this site when Mike spoke at the Boy Scouts 100th Anniversary Jamboree.
Here is his video talking about the jamboree:

And here is some video of him on stage at the jamboree--An excellent speech:

Most excellent site, Jstas: 2 enthusiastic thumbs up !

Mike Rowe also has a partnership with the big industrial supply house, Grainger.

"According to a National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) report, 80 percent of manufacturers are struggling to serve customers because they don’t have enough qualified workers. Many graduates do not have the math, science and technical skills required to work in today’s manufacturing environment. In August 2007, a poll showed that manufacturing executives rate the worker shortage as a bigger issue than oil prices or the economy. "

    I believe those statements.

I'm involved with what can be considered a skilled trade. Quite a number of my co-workers I wouldn't trust to mow my lawn.
And that ain't the way it ought to be.
