JL Audio Need Help

I have two JL Audio 10W1v2-4 (10 inch), and it is being powered by a Total Mobile Auto 500 RMS watt amp. One sub alone puts out 300 watts RMS and 600 watts peak power. I was playing my subs pretty loud and they started to smell like crap, like something burning. I researched what happened and some people are saying I am underpowering my subs. Do you think I need a bigger amp or is a 500 watt RMS amp good enough for these subs? Help me out. Thanks.

You can be "clipping" your subs in which the amp cannot keep up and starts to "clip" the wavelengths. Or you're just overdriving your subs and you're burning out the voice coil.

500 rms should be fine to run your speakers but the question is" is your amp really pushing 500 watts?". Did you find out where the smell was coming from either the speakers or the amp?
