LCiC center channel ohms

Like an idiot, I didn't check the minor detail that the LCiC center channel speaker is a 4 ohm speaker before purchasing my amplifier which is an Onkyo TX-SR508 which rates it's center channel as follows:

80 W (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 0.08%,
2 channels driven, FTC)
100 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.1%, 2 channels
driven, FTC)

Do I risk burning up my receiver if I attempt using it as the center channel? Other speakers in the 5.1 setup are all RC80i's.

If I shouldn't use the LCiC, are there any recommendations for an alternative center channel speaker at 6 to 8 ohms that will work?

    What are your mains?

Front L/R and rear surrounds are RC80i's.

PLKFN1, I had the same problem with my LSIC and my HK AVR 2600 so I e-mailed Harmon Karman they suggested buying a Impedance Matching Speaker Selector Box it cost around $40.00.

Thanks for the tip, did you have any problems with the sound quality?
Do you have a link to the one you used?

Hi,I used one from Monster it cost $70.00 you can google it to get all the info, As for sound it's great. I've attached the e-mail from HK with a couple of other links.

I would also like to point out that I'm a newbie with this Audio stuff and don,t even think I know much about it but it's fun learning and just a tad costly.

    Have a great day.

    Thank you for your email.

Harman Kardon receivers are designed to work best with speakers rated at 8 ohms. All Harman Kardon Audio/Video receivers can handle MOST 4 and 6 ohm speakers on the market today. However, there are some manufacturers' speakers that have a minimum impedance WELL BELOW the 4 and 6 ohm nominal impedance, when being fed a signal.

In this situation, the receiver will attempt to protect itself by having the fan turn on. In the extreme case, the unit will protect itself by shutting down, and go into standby mode. This is an indication that the speaker in question is not compatible with our receiver.

*Note: The continued use of the receiver with speakers that cause it to shut down can result in eventual failure of the receiver, which is not covered by the warranty.*

If you are concerned with using the speakers with this receiver, you can purchase an Impedance Matching Speaker Selector Box, which will allow you to connect any speakers to this box, while the receiver constantly sees a specific load (these boxes come in different values, i.e. 4/6/8/16 ohms). You can find these boxes in most electronics parts stores or online at www.russound.com or www.nilesaudio.com.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks & Regards,

I would call Polk and ask which free standing center channel would be a better match for your mains. It appears the rest of Polk's centers are 8ohms and should work fine with your receiver, from there it comes down to which would be timbre matched.

    According to the Polk description:

    Timbre Matched

The RCi Series speakers are timbre matched to our freestanding speakers - such as Polk Monitor, TSi and OWM series, just in case you need in ceiling surround speakers to match your freestanding fronts.

I would suggest another RC80i if it were my setup. My only question would be how you have them installed. In-wall or in-ceiling. I kknow they are in-ceiling speakers but I have seen them used in-wall before.

I would not recommend a center being installed in a ceiling.

I agree, I was thinking it could be installed in-wall.
