Lotsa interesting stuff going down. Phillies made it known they would bid for Lee but won't out-bid Yanks. Yanks offered $137M for 7 years to Lee but I think that's kinda low. The Phillies haven't posted an offer yet. But then again, with the Jeter contract, that might hurt the Yanks. If the Phillies counter offer, they just might end up with Lee. It's a long shot but it's possible. The Rangers are apparently scoffing at the idea of a 7 year contract for Lee and likely can't match the money side of it. If Lee is chasing money like Werth is, I doubt he's going to stay in Texas.

That would be the nastiest rotation in the entire league, NL or AL. Plus they have a stable of strong relievers and the Phillies have resigned half of them for next year at least and are in talks for the rest. If not, they have some Triple A pitchers waiting in the wings with big prospects and plenty of time to bring up and get ready.

Carl Crawford is on his way to Beantown for $142M and 7 years. Pena is heading to The Windy City as well. The Rays are hemorrhaging talent right now.

The dollar amounts you talk about there John are just insane IMHO... 137,000,000 for seven years, to play a game? And then they want a hundred bucks to sign a kid's baseball card? No wonder I have been done with baseball for the better part of two decades. Thanks for the reminder.

I would love, LOVE IT if Lee took less money to stay in Texas or go to the Phillies. I'm not a fan of the Yankees. But with the Yanks missing out on Crawford and Petite probably retiring it'd be a miracle if they don't get him. It is Christmas time though...

The Red Sox line up is looking ridic with A Gon and now Crawford. If they stay healthy and their pitching is just a little better than last year they will be tough to beat.

They would have been tough to beat last year but they were ravaged by injuries.

You know what I would LOVE to see? Phillies vs. Red Sox, 2011 World Series.

I dunno if Lee is gonna stay in Texas though. He wants a ring and I honestly think that the only reason San Fran and Texas went to the WS is because the better teams like the Braves, Phillies, Cards, Reds, Rays, Yanks and Padres were all caught up with injuries to key players late in the season and they all struggled to recover during the playoffs. Not to take away from either team but there were, honestly, better teams out there this year that just got the short end of the DL stick. I don't see either team getting much past the divisional series next year if they make it to the post-season at all. Given that, Lee probably sees that and is itching to get some place that can take him there.

Unfortunately for him, I don't think that's the Yankees either. If he wants to stay in the AL, the Red Sox is where he should go but the Sox aren't making a play for him. He should go back to the NL and play for the Phillies. Not only can they get there but even without Lee, they are the team to beat next year in the NL. With Lee on that rotation too...that'd be sick! I'm giddy just thinkin' about it! We're talking a dominating rotation like the Braves had with Glavine, Avery, Leibrandt and Smoltz!

If you're not interested, don't post in this thread. Pretty much a waste of time, don't you think? We get it. Baseball is boring and they're paid too much. Move on.

As for my take... I can't really stand the Sox, but that was a major coup for Epstein and company. REALLY came out of left field (so to speak). I'm just glad my Bravos avoided much of this hot stove drama by swooping in on Uggla earlier.

Relax, zombieboy. If you didn't get my sarcastic humor, my apologies.

I have no problem with the guys making as much money as they do. Its what the market dictates. Most of my lack of interest has to do with the fact that I am an Orioles fan and since Angelos took over, they are the most irrelevant franchise in MLB.

Maddux would prefer you to forget about him. Then he'd show up out of nowhere and throw a 92 pitch complete game. Halladay seems to be the same way just goes about it a little different.

Red Sox vs. Phillies would be nice. Definitely better than this past world series.

113 days till opening day. At least there is plenty of Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks in the mean time.

I sensed a disturbance in the Force when I woke up this morning. Promptly turning on Sportscenter merely confirmed it.

Where the hell did this come from? Were they the "mystery" third team all along?

They said they were gonna go for him but they weren't going to get in to a bidding war with the Yankees. But something happened with the Yankees. The deal soured and the Yankees made a butthurt press conference stating that talks were leaning towards the negative side and they felt that Lee was interested in playing for Philly again. Amaro wasn't saying anything. But I knew he was going to make a move on it 'cause it was in their favor and Lee apparently made it known that he loves the Phillies after I heard that Yankee press conference on Saturday I think it was. The Phils had a pile of money, just not enough to match Yankee money. Werth left chasing the dollar and I really don't think he wanted to stay anyway. I know the Phils came within $5M on matching the Nats offer plus they can promise post season appearances which bring other bonuses that the Nats can't. Werth just didn't want to play here anymore. Lee did, so he is.

He wasn't traded because they hated him. He was traded because they couldn't afford him. The managed to get Halladay and Oswalt after Lee left and now that Werth left with his hefty price tag, there was room for Lee. Lee wants a ring. The Yankees aren't going to give that to him. They are old, injury prone now and the pitching staff is getting thin there.

If you were a pitcher at Lee's level would you want to go some place where you have to hold the whole team up or some place where you're one of the team and everyone else's contribution is at or above your level? I'd go to the Phils if I were him. I had a sneaking feeling because of how Lee was talking after the series and how Amaro was being super quiet about it that something was going down. I don't think the Phils were the mystery team. I think that was a fabrication from the media because Amaro and Charlie weren't talking. I knew they were going for Lee they just weren't giving away their hand.

This is going to be an interesting season for the Phillies next year.

Oh and I said $100M for 5 years above. I read the news story incorrectly, it's $120M for 5 years.

BTW, for anybody who's interested, the Red Sox signed Carl Crawford. That's a big deal. That brings yet another big bat to a line up that is already heavy with hitters. If they all stay healthy this year, that Red Sox team is likely going to be the team to beat in the AL.

New York is not in the best of positions right now. It's not even a shoe-in that Pettitte resigns.

Oh, no, he's not. His psyche is quite fragile and he'll crack up again at the Yankees. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes to the Rangers though. Then again, he might just be happy cruising along and collecting a paycheck at the Royals too.

I don't think so. He's inconsistent and his slumps last months. He gets spooked easily as well. When he's on, few are better. When he's off, everyone is better. He also needs to be on a team the produces runs. The Phillies were in a run producing slump through mid-season last year and Hamels lost a bunch because he's guaranteed to give up 2 or 3 runs per game. If you can't get ahead of that before he gases late in the 7th, it's difficult to come back from.

He's a 4th starter because while he's good, Halladay, Oswalt and Lee are that much better. He may be a 1st or 2nd starter on other teams but not ones that are contenting for the World Series.

Who knows, maybe his tendency to get spooked was a lack of experience. Maybe he steps up his game gets the consistency down this year? My opinion of him can change. So, we'll see. All 4 guys have at least one year left of their contracts. Where they end up in the 2011/2012 off-season will depend on how they do in the 2011 regular season and, if they get there, the post-season.

You mean the complete ineffectiveness of a mostly new team that never played together before and then subsequent implosion, freak-out by the team management and hemorrhaging of talent?

The Angels should work with what they got and stop trying to be the Yankees. And honestly, as much as people say it, a good chunk of the talent that made the Yankees dominant for so long was home-grown. Sure, they command big paychecks now but you know what? So do the Phillies and most of that team has been playing with the Phillies since 2005 and earlier. The Yankees bought a few good insurance players but they were only able to woo serious talent after they made it somewhere with the young team they had. I think it gets twisted out of proportion because Steinbrenner was so free with the money and they were getting big names and paying a pretty penny for them too.

The Angels have a decent team. They got pretty far last year with what they have and most of them are still young. They should work on developing prospects and retaining the talent they do have. They have good veteran talent too and it makes a good mix. They have a good pitching staff and good hitters. The blocks are there, they just have to stack them in the right order. The Rangers should watch out for them next year. They could be going somewhere.
