I am moving my HT to the basement and need to re-do the electrical for lights.
There is a circuit from the breaker box leading to a switch which controls the lights for the whole basement. QUESTION - can I simply add a junction box to this line before the existing switch, and splice off another run of wire to another switch to control another set of lights?

Simple answer? Yes. It may be easier to run out of the existing box, unless there is a lot of slack in the cable to enable you to sever it and still have enough length inside the new box to make your connections.

Good deal...thanks man. I was able to pull enough slack out of the existing run to make this work.

You may want to check with local codes. In my locale we are limited to 12 items on a single circuit.
