You can look at my signature and see what I have. I am looking to replace my outlaw 950 with a newer, but not necessarily HDMI capable pre. Just looking to change things up a bit is all. Getting bored and want to rotate in some new gear. Looking for a B&K Ref 50, outlaw 990,. or any other comparale pre's. Let me know what you got. I am in the DC/MD/VA area and am looking to spend $400 or less if possible.
Take Care,
Shawn

I had an Outlaw 950 and while I liked it for the dirt cheap price and the features, when I upgraded even to an old 90's Parasound AVP I noticed a great improvement in sound quality. Got even better when I went to an Anthem AVM20, and now I have an AVM30, which is for sale but is beyond your range by a bit. I can wholeheartedly recommend Anthem products, having owned a number of their amplifiers and processors.
The Outlaw 950 you should be able to sell for $160-200, is that factored into your budget? If you could come up with $650 i'd let you steal my AVM30. Otherwise, I have heard an earlier B&K (Ref 20) and did enjoy it, so you're on the right track when it comes to cheaper HT processors. Good luck!Current System:

Why not look at an AVR and use it as a pre. At $400-$500 you can get an entry level pioneer elite or Onkyo 807/808. They have all the lastest technology and does HD decoding.

I would definitely consider that as well. Lets add that to the list then. If any of you are looking to unload an AVR (would rather stick to pio elite or onkyo) to use as a pre. please let me know. Tahnks leroy.

There are a couple really nice preamp processors with no hdmi for under 700 on agon right now. $3500 new a few years ago. Saw an anthem and a b&k, looked to be in great condition. Saw an Acurus Act3 on there as well.Vinyl, the final frontier...

Forgot to mention; I will need pre-outs because I still want to use external amplification. But I guess with the newest formats, I have no need for multichannel analog outputs. Correct?Shawn

If you are using seperate amps I wouldn't consider an AVR unless I already had it in my hands.Vinyl, the final frontier...

That's what I was originally thinking; thats why I wanted to do a pre-amp (like I have now). But if an AVR would work just as well, I'd be ok with it. I just don't want to be disappointed with an AVR's performance as a pre and then go back to the original plan.Shawn

If you're still interested in a very nice pre/pro setup, I have a really nice B&K Reference 50 S2 that I'll consider parting with. I was looking to list it for around $600 but will consider letting it go for less to good home. This processor has treated me very nicely and I have done the same back. It was almost $3000 new so it's actually kind of hard to let it go considering it still does everything that's required even by today's standards, minus the HDMI switching of course which never bothered me in my setup. Let me know if you're still interested.

I have been really happy with my B&K ref. pre's (I have the 20 & 30).
I KNOW you will be happy with the 50!
Not my best HT pre, but I have never considered selling them because of the sound quality, and the little amount invested.
You would have to spend alot more to get better SQ.
Great bang for buck!Testing

I have a JBL AV1, which is the same as the Lexicon MC4. It is an awesome processor. I purchased it at Tweeter a few years ago. MSRP was $4500. I upgraded since I needed HDMI. It is in good shape with remote and manual. I will sell for $500.00. I am in Burke VA.

Hi Shawn, I have a Sony-TAE9000ES I would part with if you think you would like that. I wasn't going to sell it but I also don't use it so it may as well go to someone else. Not sure how it compares to the B&K stuff but I can tell you my father also uses one and it sounds great for movies on his set up. Mine is currently used for a simple two channel system I rarely use.
Just a thought if you are still looking.

If I could get the funds together, that is definitely the way I want to go. I have some things selling on ebay right now that will dictate what I am able to afford. I also would then part with my outlaw 950 as well (another member is interested in purchasing it). So all in all, if I can get the $600, I will be getting the B&K Ref 50.

Not trying to pimp my stuff, but IMHO, the JBL/Lexicon MC4 will outperform the B&K in surround modes and is just as good in stereo. I owned a B&K ref 30 and I definitely prefer the Lexicon over it. To be fair, I never listened to the ref 50. I ran both through my B&K 7270 amp. I do live B&K products.
As always, just my opinion.
