Questions for Home Theater setup
My house has an open floor plan, meaning that the Living Room and Kitchen run together. There is a wall that separates the two, but it is only 5ft wide.
The total dimensions are 20ft x 30ft with 9ft side walls and a cathedral ceiling that peaks at 13ft.
My question is what should I be looking for with regards to speakers and a receiver?
Thanks,
Ben

That's kind of an open question. Welcome to the club however!
Answer these and we'll try to help you out!
1.what is your budget?
2. How big of a tv
3. Plasma or LCD?
4. Wall mounted or stand?
5. Bookshelf or floorstanding speakers?
6. Do you have a picture of your wall you'll be putting it on? You can't upload yet but you can put it on photobucket and link it!

Thanks for the welcome and yes, I know it's an open question. Also, the listening area is 17ft x 20ft.
Here are some quick answers to your questions:
1. $3000 and this does not include TV.
2. TV will be 55-60
3. Leaning toward LED
4. Leaning toward wall mounted
5. Floorstanding
6. Don't have a picture -
Do you want in wall or on wall speakers? You can buy a lot for $3000, keep in mind wall mounted speakers will definitely restrict your choices.Main Surround -

For the surrounds, I would like on wall speakers. For the fronts I was thinking of placing the center channel on top of my console below the TV which would be mounted on the wall, with Floor standing speakers on each side.
I had originally thought of using satellite speakers throughout, but didn't think their size would work given the size of the room. -

I agree with you . It may go outside of budget a tad (depends on shopping/deals), but it will definitely put a smile on the OP's face when he gives it listen.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

So get all of it minus the SVS, making him yearn for bass...save up and buy it.Main Surround -

Save some money and buy through Polk Direct....maybe the savings can buy you RTiA9s and FXiA6s due that is a pretty big room. Shepardp's AVR and sub choices are right on also...

I agree with this statement 1000% I'm the type that buys the right stuff the first time around, and it lasts. I'd rather spend a grand on something that will last a lifetime (ok..maybe 10 years before you move it to the basement) than have to replace mediocre stuff every couple of years to keep up with the jones'65" Sony X900 (XBR-65X900E)
