I agree. I cant stand Crime Warner. Service has been out here 4 times in the last 2 months and every tech tells you something different. But I live in an apt so I am stuck.

Boy I wish I had Time Warner. When I lived in central NY I had no problems with them. Now I have Charter. PC Mag and Consumer Reports place Charter dead last in their list of ISP's.

I wish I could get FIOS but they aren't in my area apparently. I have been considering Direct TV but unsure about the internet (since I sometimes play call of duty online) and overall service (cable interuptions and service). Anyone use them, any reviews?

I have had Time Warner at 2 address for the past 7 years. During that time I've had 2 days of downtime, about 3 years ago. They're not the cheapest option, but I've never had any problems with the company.

Their Motorola DVR boxes, however, are a different story, they're just awful. I switched to Tivo boxes some time back and could not be happier, these TiVo boxes are a no brainer if you're a cable customer.

I've had no outages with comcast in my area. Cutomer service sucks as probably with all cable companies. I just wish I had cheaper alternatives. I pay 200 bucks a month for HD basic with one dvr box, home phone, and high speed internet. Dish systems are out because I back to forests, lots of tree's. Oh well, when they have you by the nuts, they charge accordingly.

    You have options.

You have high speed internet, right? Solution. Get yourself Magic Jack. $20 bucks a year domestic unlimited. International rates are pennies on the dollar. The downside? You have to keep the computer on. Quality? The same as any other phone you use. If you have an internet connection, you have a home phone. [$20.00 a year]

Or, ditch the home phone and get Straight Talk. It's a service sold by Walmart but uses the same exact network as Verizon. All you can talk, text and surf for 45 smackers a month. Phones are dirt cheap and include features that I never use....keep in mind, these are no Blackberry's but if you want a phone that's reliable and has the same coverage as Verizon? Well, there you go. Get one for the wife too. Keep in mind, the suggestion of this was to replace your home phone, which has no real features. [Avg. $100.00 per phone and $45.00 per month or less phone bill] They also have lower priced plans, FYI.

Now, when it comes to satellite signals? Talk to them. They can mount it on roofs, run a line hundreds of feet or they could install a tower. Yes, the installation cost is going to hurt but after that your cable company won't own you. I don't know whether it's feasible or not but DirecTV freakin' rocks....and they have done so for over 2 decades for me. Even if you have to pay a tree company to remove a "path" of limbs 10' wide to get the signal, ask. It never hurts to ask.

Don't ever feel like you are locked into something you don't like. Unless you are in the mob or some sh_t.

I use all 3 and I have less complaints than I ever have with any other service providers.

Thanks for the suggestions Tom. Rooftop is out due to tree's very close to the house. Those in our neighborhood who had direct tv, have mostly ditched it for cable due to signal problems. Snow was also a factor on many dishes, who wants to go up on the roof in the winter to knock snow off a dish? Also can't put a tower anywhere due to tree's. I would give fios a try if it was available in our area, but it's not. Pretty much stuck with comcast,AT&T, and comcast wins that battle. I know about Magicjack, just can't get past leaving the computer on all the time though. Can't be good for the power supply in the computer. Whatever happened to the good old days when watching TV was...free ?

Ahhh, I didn't factor in snow. We rarely get that here. You sound like you are stuck with that, at least for now.

As far as the computer and it's power supply? I have had my computer on pretty much constantly since a decade ago and I still have the same power supply. In fact, the only thing I've replaced is the hard drive, once about a year or two ago. Someone told me way back when that if you keep your computer on, it stresses the entire thing less, keeps everything at an optimal operating temperature and is less wear on the hard drive.

YMMV [as well as others] but I do know this. My parents have replaced their entire computer twice since I purchased mine. Whoever told me that apparently knew something. Either that or I'm one lucky SOB. FWIW.

If you're wanting to keep that land line, Majic Jack is a great way to go.
If you're worried about keeping the computer on affecting its longevity, don't.
As Treitz mentioned, it's the startup surges that stress it ( keep in mind you probably want to pop the side off and just vacuum out any accumulated dust monkeys every couple of months).
Go online and get a cheapo E-machine or off-lease machine to use with the magic jack.

Find all sorts of new (with operating system) machines for $150 or so
(http://www.pricewatch.com/computer_systems_with_os/) or go the TigerDirect route for an off-lease machine for $100 or so (with OS).

Around here, you can get AT&T internet (slower 76xKbps) for $14.95 a month, so for $200 a YEAR, you have internet access and a landline.
(1.5mbps speeds are $19.95 per month).

Around here, Dish and DirectTV are in constant competition, so rates vary but are cheap.

Cable/Charter CS blows beyond all levels of human comprehension; son had internet/basic cable installed, bill came for TajMahal level service (which he hadn't ordered), so ..... he cancelled after 3 days. :frown:

I pay 180/month  for time warner which comprises of only internet and one dvr hd tv box w/two movie channels and hd tv package (oh and cable upstairs w/out even a box)! As far as dish tv, we have it at work and it has had plenty of signal problems lately and every few weeks otherwise, thats why I was considering direct. I just use a cell for home phone purposes so thats not a concern yet. I guess i'm screwed unless i tempt fate with direct tv.....or wait till fios gets here.

Hmmm . . . 14 years ago (1996) and all I could get was dial up, but diagonally across the street the adjacent municipality had Time Warner (Roadrunner). They bent the rules and got a variance for me to cross political boundaries from the city into my township. I had to pay for the provisioning, $1.00 per foot to cover the 1,000 feet of line required to connect my home office.

I had a commercial account that cost $63 per month until a year ago when I actually converted it to cheaper standard residential service for $39 a month.

In those first 14 years, I had stellar service with perhaps 3 brief outages when a server went down or a car crashed a utility pole, maybe 9 total hours of interruption in 14 years. Yes, just 9 hours down out of 122,640 hours. The past year I've been down perhaps 15 minutes, so overall, down just 9.25 hours out of 131,400 hours.

I have had 15 years of superior service (and I want to make it clear I have no afiliation with TWC).

P.S. Someone above mentioned MagicJack. The program you have to run 24/7 for MagicJack to work is capturing 100% of every conversation you make and phoning it home to those scumbags who both archive it for future misuse, AND sell the marketing profile of businesses you call to advertisers.

I've never heard that, Inspired. If true, that blows ! I did some googling, but couldn't find any info on that, so I got on the MagicJack website and went through about 10 layers of crap to finally get to a "Live Chat".
( I'm "Fred" on MagicJack .... was going to put "Fred Flintstone", but ...."

"Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'Lizzie'
Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK43606222409X"

Lizzie: Hello, how may I help you?
Fred: I've heard that MagicJack captures 100% of every conversation you make and relays it to MagicJack where it is archived for future use and to sell the marketing profile of businesses you call to advertisers. Is this correct ? Does MagicJack archive phone conversations ?

Lizzie: What do you mean by your archive Fred?Lizzie: Can you make this clear please?>

Fred: Store phone conversations on a server or hard drive ?

Lizzie: Please be informed that it is not yet possible.
Lizzie: MagicJack do not have that feature yet.

Fred: OK, was wondering because a friend told me that this is done. I wasn't sure so I thought I would ask.

    Lizzie: No problem Fred.
Lizzie: As of now, we do not have that feature.

    Fred: Okay, thanks !

Lizzie: But no worries, we will address your concern.

Fred: Okay, have a good day !

    Lizzie: You too.

Fred: Let me make sure now: there's no way for you to tell if I'm wearing pants right now, is there ...... Puddin' ?

Lizzie: No, but I was hoping you weren't .....

Fred: Okay, Cupcake, get ahold of yourself. Gotta go.

    Lizzie: ....sobbing noises....

The "NOT YET" and "AS OF NOW DOES NOT" isn't very reassuring. :frown:

BTW .... maybe the last couple of lines didn't ACTUALLY occur ... but they COULD HAVE !

If you have a link, Inspired, to some source info that you could post, that'd be cool.
