Terra, if you post where you are located. We may be able to recommend something used, like off your local Craigslist.--Gary--
Onkyo Integra M504, Bottlehead Foreplay III, Denon SACD, Thiel CS2.3, NHT VT-2, VT-3 and Evolution T6, Infinity RSIIIa, SDA1C and a few dozen other speakers around the house I change in and out. -
Tough crowd. To those of you that actually offered some useful info, thanks for all the help. Much appreciated. I'm outa here before I get called a transsexual, a transvestite or something even worse.
You're interest is cool but your selection of boyfriends isn't. The search function is awesome and takes seconds. You rule! I'm outta here as well.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
A woman suggesting an audio upgrade? If things don't work out with the current boyfriend, give me a call! In all seriousness, speakers first without a doubt. They impact the sound you hear much more than amps. There are many good choices in the $1500 price range. Time to audition some gear!

How hot is it that Terra S is actually a fat, balding dude wearing a monocle, with his hand down the newly purchased Spiderman footie underwear he bought with a MOM gift card from Target'? Good luck with your speaker choices dude.
You just described me to a tee. :biggrin:SRT For Life; SDA Forever!
The SRT SEISMIC System:
Four main satellite speakers, six powered subs, two dedicated for LFE channel, two center speakers for over/under screen placement and three Control Centers. Amaze your friends, terrorize your neighbors, seize the audio bragging rights for your state. Go ahead, buy it; you only go around once. -
I'm amazed this thread lasted as long as it did before people started drooling over a potential audio babe.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I'm drooling over one right now, as she's making me brownies
Seriously though, upgrade the speakers.
Question is though, what is he looking for as an end result (even if it's just for a year or two). If he upgrades his speakers, will they be efficient speakers to utilize said tube-amp or will they be power-hungry speakers that will then require an amp upgrade anyway.
Just food for thought.Truck setup

I may be wrong but that original post really struck me as trolling. My boyfriend wants to go from tubes to Emotiva amps? A statement like that couldn't possibly be trolling. Monitors 7's are old and ugly and sound like crap when turned up loud. Nope no trolling there either.

I agree. I think it's weird to suggest that unless they have some other information outside of her posts. Based on what I've read she seems legit, so unless they know something else it's rude, and kiddish.Setup:

Maybe from the first post it seems like that, but if you look at her other posts...she's taking people's advice. If she was trolling I think her responses would be more along the lines of defending Emotiva, and bashing Polk/Tubes.Setup:

After penciling in next Friday on the calendar for "Potential Date With Terra S", I scratched that off.
As usual, good advice, F1.
I do agree that Terra S had/has some legit questions, and there were some legit answers provided. Cool.
But this post kind of sent my spider senses tingling:Horns? Like what are "horns" ? Totally lost - horns?
Just doesn't quite fit in with someone who appears to possess some knowledge of audio. From another thread.Terra S wrote:Hey guys, I'd like your opinion on which two channel desktop system would sound better for streaming audio and MP3 playback. Rather than powered computer speakers I would like to take it to the next level. My friend who has a mini home recording studio recently upgraded his gear and gave me his old sound card. It's a M-Audio Audiophile2496 sound card which has analog RCA I/O jacks. So I'm contemplating getting either:
1.) Parasound Zamp v3 and pair it with a Zpre2 two channel preamp (found on craigslist in excellent condition for about $300).
2.) The Virtue ONE two channel amp w/integrated volume control. (just under $300 w/standard powersupply direct from Virtue audio). There's a really good youtube video on it HERE.
Two totally different solutions. The first one is the more traditional amp + preamp, the second much newer design but limited to one input and no remote. Both are small in size but the Virtue ONE is by far the smallest and most simple. I've read some really rave reviews about it and an upgraded power-supply is also available to give it more WPC. Just wondering which you guys think would be a better system to pair with the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound-card and a nice pair of Polk monitors?
May not be Bob Carver, but .... does appear to know how to research some stuff, so .... totally lost on "horns" ?
So, even if Doro's description is correct, what the heck. Keep asking questions, and some us will learn something along the way.You just described me to a tee.

Yeah, I do know some things because I've researched them but I had never heard speakers called horns before. So maybe I'm not as smart as most of you. But I was not trolling or trying to start anything.
I had a disagreement with my boyfriend over some stupid email when those XPA-1 amps went on sale because he thought more power would be the answer. But it doesn't matter.
I'm really sorry I came in here. I don't very often and now I remember why. I was just trying to find out what some of you more experienced people thought so I'd have a leg to stand on when I went back to try and convince him that he doesn't need those big amps.
When i first started this thread I liked communicating with the Polk community as some of you were really nice. But others sure changed that in a hurry. I guess I don't belong here. So you all go on back to your good ole' boys club. Pardon my interruption. -

Thank you! I saw this as a legitmate thread until a few decided to be jerks. Unless you know these people in question, what right do you have questioning who they say they are?
When are some of you going to learn that if you can't be helpful, and polite, then just STFU!
To Terra, I'm also a woman on this board who loves good audio. My advise would be to tell him to upgrade in stages. He should also take you along to listen to any gear he is thinking of purchasing.
One thing though,is that there is no such thing as too much power. Although if this is for a home theater, he should get a 5 channel 200wpc amp and be done with that particular upgrade.
His speakers are probably not getting all the power that they can handle especially if he is trying to crank them in a big room. Tubes are not really meant for high volume in big spaces. They work best in small rooms @ lower volumes.
High effeciency speakers means metal tweeters ie horns. I hate them, after an hour I will have a headache since they are way too bright for my liking.
So, I what I would suggest is get a powerful 2-5 channel amp of at least 200wpc @ 8ohms and try that out on his current speakers. If he/you are still unsatisfied, then start shopping for new speakers. You won't have to worry about powering them since the amp will already be in place.
Best of luck.
