I needed to upgrade an older Directv box, so I called them 2 weeks ago. Was told $99 plus $49 service call. I can hook it up myself. No, this is a special deal and it requires a service technician... No thanks.

Looked online. I can order one for $99 and specify self-installation. Cool. Deciding to give them one more try over the phone, I called again tonight. She offered me the same deal. I ask if she can do better. Hold on, let me see if your old receiver qualifies for a better deal. On hold for 5 minutes. Nope, it's not quite old enough to qualify for a free upgrade.

Did she say FREE?! I suggest that maybe I should wait a little longer until it does qualify... She puts me on hold for another 5 minutes or so to see what she might be able to do. How about pay $99 now and in three days, we'll issue you a $99 credit to your Directv account? Uh, deal!

How old is your receiver? Maybe I'm due a free upgrade. Would love to get multi-room DVR.

I had an older HD receiver made by Samsung that had an OTA digital tuner, but I've since ditched my outdoor antenna. I connected it to my dish, only to find our that it only supports MPEG-2, and that Directv converted to MPEG-4 some time ago. It would only bring in SD channels, which aren't so much fun when projected on a 120" screen.

Bought it in 04, I think. Call and ask. And don't take their first offer!

    Same here but with Dish.
Mine went out after 2 years and they sent me a brand new one with HDMI out!
Much better, the old one had only coax and analog out.

My contract has been up for sometime, and I think they are scared to raise the price as they did when I was under contract.

Did the same thing with my DVR from Directv.

Besides Polk I don't think there is better customer service than Directv.
