Basic 5-1 hookup

I have the 40's wall mounted as back surround. No surround L/R speakers. 5-1 syst.
When I run the audyessy setup it can not detect the left speaker? I have the speakers hooked up to L/R back surround on the reciever?
Should I instead hook this up as L/R surround on the reciever?

//Thanks

    When running the manual setup, if I select surround it depicts L/R speakers witch is not there. But it then lets me select settings for the L/R back surrounds.

    Why do you have them hooked up to the back surround and not the regular surround left and right ?

    It happens....you just threw me off with the 5.1 setup and use of the back surrounds. Run the auto calibration again and see how it sounds. Make sure the mike is at ear level in your sitting position. You still may have to adjust some things manually to your taste. Rock on.

    Swede, the surround speakers in a 5.1 setup are side surrounds, not back or rear surrounds, even if they're mounted on the back wall. The best position for them is generally to the side of the listening position, but maybe a couple of feet farther back, to lend a little "back" effect in the absence of actual back speakers which would be there in a 7.1 setup.

    When you selected surround the 707 correctly calibrated and fed signals to the L/R surround speakers(which are behind you because you put them there). If you select "none" for the side surrounds, you can't select back surrounds because you have to have side surrounds first. If you incorrectly indicate that there are also back surrounds(i.e., a 7.1 setup), that setting shows, but of course no signals go to the non-existent back surround speakers.

    So yes, just use the correct L/R side surround setting and "none" for the back surrounds. If possible, you should also consider repositioning your M40s to a location more nearly to the side of the listening position.

    Of course, besides the setting, the connection should be made to the surround, not the back surround terminals on the 707.
