Any computer geeks here? Question on a TB drive

Am looking at a 1 or 2 TB drive and would like to know how many hours of uncompressed cd quality songs they can hold. I can get the NUMBER of songs they can hold but that does not take into account songs that last the entire side of a disc or songs that lat 10minutes etc.....

    I have an 500gb drive with 143gig of WAV audio file 1411kbps in iTunes.
    It say 18.7 days of Music, so about 450hrs of music.

    That would be a .wav file....

    just figure 650 megabytes per CD....

    1 gigabyte per two CDs

    1000 gigabytes per 1 terrabyte

    p.s. -- I just bought a 2 terabyte drive from target for myself for christmas.... and i was asking myself the same question.

    but i'll probably go with flac files as they are lossless compression and you get about 50% reduction in file size from what i can tell - with no loss in SQ.

    An uncompressed WAV file at 1411kbs is about 10MB for 1 minute of 2-channel audio.

    You're lookin' at about 1600 hours of music on a 1TB drive, 3200 hours on a 2TB drive.

    I've got 6TB of music space right now (3TB internal backed up on 3TB external); it's 99% FLAC and SHN.

    I see about 120 KB per sec of music uncompressed. 1TB = 1,099,511,628 kb so about 2545 hours of music

    hmm. I got more like 166KB per second of music:confused:, which is more like 1850 hours not the 1600 I said before.

    you have a lot of music. that's a good price.. 7200 rpm??? they have a seagate for $69 right now at newegg... only 5900 rpm though...still fine for storage.

    Yep, about 2,000 cd's and about 700 albums I will be transferring also...

    If you ever plan on transferring between the two or adding movies I would looks fo one with an eSATA connection as it will transfer 100 times faster.

    A single song of "average" length is generally about 24-35 Mbytes in *.wav format.

    The nice thing about FLAC is you tag all your music. WAV files can't be tagged. You can rename the file in the folder on your HD, but once you transfer that anywhere else there is no tag. If you ever plan on using any type of music server or other player like foobar or media monkey or even iTunes there won't be any identifying info embedded in the file. That will be a REAL PITA later to add tags to all your music.

    WAV is the worst choice if you plan on managing your music at all. Go FLAC and get the tags as you rip your music, then your set for whatever direction you choose in the future.

    Let me be more concise about metadata tags for WAV files. It can be done, but it's not that easy and I don't believe it's universal.

    Personally I'd go FLAC though and save more space as well as the tagging capabilities as H9 mentioned. FLAC can be converted back to WAV if you ever wanted to (it's bit for bit identical to the original wav).

    Whatever you decide, without a doubt double what you get--it is an absolute must to backup the media. You don't want to spend 100s-1000s of hours ripping CDs, to a drive that might fail.

    Either get a mirrored external drive(has two physical drives mirrored to each other in one external box), or manually (even if scheduled) ensure a backup to a second physical drive.

    You could also do internal drives the same way. A lot of newer motherboards have RAID support anymore, and this sometimes includes RAID with external drives.

    I'd rather do more smaller drives than a single larger drive. Don't put all your eggs into one basket as the saying goes. :wink:

    For external, +1 on eSATA if you can swing it (if your system supports it or you get an add in card), or even USB 3.0. USB 2.0 is about 480Mb/s, where eSATA is about 3Gb/s for transfer rates. It's really a factor when doing mass transfers such as complete backups, etc., not so much a factor when just ripping one at a time or streaming from it.
