final word on tires, I promise

ok.. it comes with owning more than one vehicle... they all eventually need tires.. and because I live in the frozen tundra where the temp was 9 below zero a few days ago... we need good all season and snow tires. and good off road ones too.

it's rare to find one tires that can do all those things and do them well...

my '91 F-150 had old all season tires.. which were fine for summer, not so good for winter.. where we already have over 16 inches of snow on the ground. :mad:

welp, today i broke down and bought two front tires... went with the recommendation from the tire guy... glad I did too. (235/75/R15 for you tire nerds)

Went with Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S (all terrain + Snow) these are mounted on the front of the truck.. dang if I don't have some serious stopping traction now, even in the deep as hell snow where I live. I have never owned a pair of tires that handle the snow so well.

Rear tires are dedicated Firestone studded snow tires, which I got last winter. So now my little truck kicks the snow's **** and laughs at it.

Come spring I'll replace the rear all season's with another pair of the Yoko's.

I might even have to do some off roading now. :eek:

Geolander ATs are very good tires. That's what i'm running on the Cherokee, and i will likely never buy a different tire for that vehicle as long as they're still available.

Having to plan for a 40min shoveling session every AM is lame..

reviews I read said they can be noisy on dry streets.. you notice any above average noise/hum from them?

It's a Cherokee... it's a brick, and about as refined as one.

They aren't bad. The stock stereo is more than enough to cover it up, so i'd say you'll be ok.

You got 13" last year and have studded snow tires? We get 150 to 200 inches a year. Never needed more than all seasons. Studded tires here are banned, they claim it damages the roads.

Those things are probably rather quiet compared to what I run on my 79 F150 lol

Studs don't really help in snow, they are for ice. Anyplace that gets consistent freeze/thaw cycles where the roads do not get good sand or salt treatments at night have a tendency to be icy in the early morning.

There are new high tech tires that handle the ice fairly well. Bridgestone Blizzaks being the first coming out in 1993. They are a good alternative to studs, and they stop quicker on dry pavement. The downside is the cost and wear. The material that makes them so effective on ice wears rapidly and is mostly gone after about 50% tread wear.

A lot of states seasonably ban studs such as allowing from mid October through mid April to limit road damage which does occur with studs.

For mud/snow/ice when you really must go, or if you do any off road in the winter time, nothing will really beat a good set of chains. Two sets for 4 wheel drive. They are a PITA to put on and take off, but if you get in over your head, they will get you out.

Western Washington wants the studded tires banned too.. us in Eastern washington will never let that happen.

Yeah, it's true.. studded tires do eat up the roads.. but i'm used to having bad roads... so it evens out. i usually run just all seasons too. finding the right tire helps.. not all tires are good in deep snow and ice.
