I was surprised to see this buried in the 'B' section of the paper. Good work by the Feds to nab a sh!tbag.

I hope he gets life too, but that is not the way things work anymore. Al Sharpton, with chants of "no justice-no peace" will claim entrapment and his civil rights were violated. Some federal judge will toss the case.

Jail time? Execute the SOB!!!

While the TSA was digging around in your grandma's panties, the FBI caught the young muslim male with weapons of mass destruction. It's nice to see that one of our government agencies is still on the ball

Nah, that's the easy way out. Let him sit in jail for the next 40 to 50 years, that should make for a very long and painful life.

Getting the public involved to report suspicious behavior is a big tool in preventing this stuff. Glad it was pounced on before anything bad came of it. Hard labor in a Siberian prison comes to mind. Even though this kid is only 19, I would not feel comfortable letting him out in 10,20,30 years, and also don't want to pay for his existance here either. Maybe some kind of military prison is in order. We already pay soldiers, hello Gitmo.

Yep, a gentleman by the name of Josef Stalin made quite a career out of using reports of "suspicious behavior". I think 20 million "suspicious" people lost there lives.

I feel so proud of the FBI for recruiting him, training him, supplying him with money, materials, & logistics.

Did they ever force him to do anything he didn't want to do? Did he fallow through it from beginning to end? Was he going to detonate the bomb? It was only after he tried to detonate it did they arrest him. So you would feel good if they released him?

I was actually at that lighting ceremony and I remember hearing about a commotion somewhere nearby. Needless to say, I'm kinda glad it wasn't a real bomb!

I'm sorry if I offended anyone, I was just trying to point out that this guy, from what I understand, was spoon fed by the FBI.
Again, I apologize, I get wound up sometimes & let things get the better of me.

Being patriotic is great and all (my grandfather was a green beret and both my step-brothers are in the service), but your comments earlier felt a little too much like zealotry to me. You seem to have a good head on you though, so i'm glad this didn't escalate.

What I got from the story was this:

    1. Teenager sends and receives coded messages from a "suspicious"' person
    2. FBI approaches the teenager pretending to be a contact from said "person".
    3. Teenager proceeds to tell agents that he wants to detonate a bomb and kill people.
    4. Teenager proceeds to purchase and "assist" in building the bomb.
    5. Teenager "detonates" the bomb, in his mind killing a lot of people.

Now, there is obviously more to the story than is being printed (it was a 6 month operation I believe). However, nowhere does it sound like the kid was prodded or led towards building a bomb and trying to detonate it. He took all the steps under his own influence.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "zealot".
I don't believe everything the media or government tells me. That being said...
I never heard about #1, coded messages & all. If he did in fact initiate this, than he's up to no good.
How I understood the events, again, through the media, was...
#1. FBI informant approaches teenager, asks if he would like to "do some damage".
#2. Teenager agrees, starts planning to "hitem where it hurts", with informant.
#3. Informant provides teenager with money to live on & buy a bomb.
#4 Another FBI informant sells the teenager a fake bomb.
#5 teenager & informant plan when & where to set off bomb.
#6 FBI swoops in & saves the day.

Now, I'm not being sarcastic or unamerican, that's just the way I heard it went down.

I never heard about #1, coded messages & all.

It's in the article linked in the first post.
U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton released federal court documents to The Associated Press and the Oregonian newspaper that show the sting operation began in June after an undercover agent learned that Mohamud had been in regular e-mail contact with an "unindicted associate" in Pakistan's northwest, a frontier region where Al Qaida and Afghanistan's Taliban insurgents are strong.

Mohamud and the associate used coded language in an e-mail in which the FBI believes Mohamud discussed traveling to Pakistan to prepare for "violent jihad," the documents said.

Last June an FBI agent contacted Mohamud "under the guise of being affiliated with the first associate."

Granted, he didn't come out and say "LETS JIHAD!" in the emails, but there was plenty there to make the FBI nervous.

Some tips on how to avoid being "entrapped" by the FBI....
Mohamed Osman Mohamud, age 19, pleaded not guilty to charges he planned to blow up Portland's Christmas tree lighting ceremony last Friday, and his lawyer is arguing ENTRAPMENT: that he would never have been able to build that fake bomb without the active assistance of FBI undercover agents.

Entrapment is a serious charge, because it implies that law enforcement is out of control and that ANY of us could've have found ourselves under arrest for making a weapon of mass destruction.

So -- here are some tips to avoid being entrapped by the FBI, inspired by the FBI's own timeline. Number one... don't meet with strangers and tell them that you're thinking of making a bomb, but need some help. Number two... don't mail bomb parts to these strangers. Number three... don't blow up a test bomb while they watch. Number four... don't park a van that you think is loaded with explosives near a large crowd of people. Number five ...don't turn on your cell phone and dial the number that the strangers just told you would detonate that.

Now of course there's always the chance law enforcement IS out of control and made all this up -- that's why there will be a trial -- and I suppose his attorney could argue that it was Mohamud who was stringing THE undercover agents along... that he intended to catch THEM, because it is true -- his last act was to dial what turned out to be an FBI number.

But that brings us to the final tip for avoiding entrapment -- in the event you have cooperated with some helpful strangers to build a bomb for the purpose of entrapping THEM, when its time to report them to the FBI -- use the number in the phone book.
