Frozen 6511 in SDA 1C's

Hmm... If that is the case, maybe I will just get one while I am working on fixing the other one. I won't have much time until the 1st of the year to work on the driver, so this would at least let me enjoy my SDA's. Then I could keep my eye out for a vintage 6511 and repair the old one first of the year. I would hate not being able to listen to everything the next couple months.
Also, I had a credit over at Parts Express, so I ordered some drivers to play with... Maybe I should start another thread for this, but I have not seen many people try this... I purchased the following:
4 x Dayton DC160S-8 (6510 Replacement)

4 x Dayton DC160S-4 (6511 Replacement)

4 x Goldwood GW-6PC-8 (6510 Replacement)

4 x Goldwood GW-6PC-4 (6511 Replacement)

Has anyone ever tried this before? Would it even be a good idea to try? Don't want to hurt anything, but I thought it would be an interesting test.

I think it is the closet match that I can find. Some have said the 6503, but the impedance seems to be off compared to the 6511...
Thanks!!!

Don,
The driver shim used measures 0.25mm / .01 in. This guy didn't offer much help as to the swappability aspect. But I have an e-mail out to another ex-Polk engineer who may be more help. I am waiting to hear from him. I'll let you know when I do. Hope this helps. Cheers. -
I still can't believe this happened to you! Everything was going fine, then bam Sorry to hear the news Don, I hope you get them up and running very soon.

When my two 6511's blew I had to do something so I replaced the 6511's with a pair of 6 1/2 shielded drivers from a pair of Polk R20's I have lying around. The impedence measured very similar but the drivers look very different. The surrounds are larger on the R20's. There were no product numbers at all on the R20's so I have no idea what model they are. Anyway, it was an experiment and they worked quite well while waiting to find some other 6511's. The right speaker did voice just slightly differently but not a large amount and it got me by listening to music still. So, ya I've tried different drivers and they worked. YMMV.SDA-1C (full mods)

OK... On Monday I ended up ordering a replacement 6511 from Polk CS. In the meantime, I took the time to remove every driver and check polarity, DC resistance, and general overall condition. I had finished the left speaker (the one with the frozen 6511), and everything else looked good with it. I moved on to the right speaker and pulled out both 6510 SDA drivers, they both looked good and Re on them was right at 6.6 ohms. Looking good. Pulled the first 6511 stereo driver, measuring 3.2-3.3 ohms. Wonderful. Here is where the story takes a turn for the worse... I pulled out the last stereo driver and once I got it out, the label was missing. I thought that was kind of odd, but didn't think much of it until I checked the resistance.... 6.6 ohms! What? That's not a 6511  It measures in that regard more like a 6510, or many of the other 6.5" 8 ohm drivers from Polk.
So I called Polk CS this morning to order another 6511... To add insult to injury, it seems I did not get the Club Polk discount on my last 6511!!! This one was almost $20 cheaper
Alright, I got my frustrations out.
So... I put in some of the Dayton DC160S-4 drivers I bought in a panic. They sound OK.... But something just isn't right, obviously. They are a harsh sounding driver compared to the 6511's, and I don't think I am getting the full SDA effect as they don't match the 6510's sonically... It is something for now, but I am ANXIOUS to get my 6511 replacements to hear what they are supposed to sound like. Then I will keep my eyes out for some vintage 6511's...
