Onkyo TX-NR808 or TX-NR1008

Hello,
I obviously purchased my equipment within the last 4 weeks. My Onkyo dealer here keeps coming out with these little cost upgrades. For example to go from the 808 to the 1008, will cost me $188.00 plus local tax.
Do you think this is a good upgrade for the price? 7.2 to 9.2... etc.

Depends on what the starting price was on the 808. I have to change that. NO I don't think it's worth it. The Real Upgrade would be the TX-SR 3008!
I use an 805--but that 805 is really more like a 3008 than an 808 or 1008 with regards to its amp sections. And I'm very happy with it 'alone' powering my M-70 system (the predecessor to the TSI-500s).
The 3008 also has more features and, therefore, more future proof?
So unless you're willing to spend for the 3008, just buy the 808..

I have the 808, but the 1008 with 9.2 channels is only $188 more. The 3008 is probably more than I can afford, and it is not on sale.Main Home Theater

I'd say that's your call. Some here have 100X receivers and love the extra two channels. Some reviews say they don't make a significant 'difference'. Since I've never heard 9.2 I'm in no position to comment about that.
What I can say is that if you run 9.2 with that 1008 the power will be reduced since it's not that different from an 808 and yet you're adding 2 channels?
Your call. I'd think a demo is in order...got to hear it first!

I was thinking further down the road where the FL, C, FR and two others can be directed to an external amp. In the case of the 808, the two others would be the SL and SR. In the case of the 1008, I would probably do the FLW and FRW; the other 4 channels would be powered from the receiver.Main Home Theater

I have the NR5008 and it's way too much AVR for me from my last AVR(B&K 317). The 805 is nothing like the 3008 -
The K series Onkyo are more like, if not exactly like the Integra series, not the 800 series.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If you mean feature wise. I agree. But both are similar High Current WRAT Onkyo designs that are channel for channel fairly equivalent in terms of POWER and weight. That's all I'm saying. I HIGHLY doubt the amplifier tech in the 3008 is that different from the grand-daddy of the 800 series....the 51 lb 805?
The 805 and 875/6 shared the same amp architecture and the 3007 was the successor of the 876, followed by the 3008--which is mostly a HT Tech but NOT amp upgrade! Basically it adds some POWER for the two extra channels for 9.2 sound? So its a few lbs heavier--not much.
Burr Brown DACs remain HT processing is upgraded in the 3008..yes. Internet features are added, 1.4 HDMI, better video upscaling. But I bet if you just balance your speakers in a 7.1 configuration with a SPL meter manually, you'd hear LITTLE difference in sound? Because there has NOT been a revolution in Onkyo Amplifier tech that leaves the 805 obsolescent as a HT powerhouse.
So not really disagreeing...improved surround, possibly. Better power? NO!
The 875/76 series were also very very similar to the Integra lines those years. So that would suggest that they also had similar amp sections to the 805?

I think what leroyjr1 was saying is that the 805 is one of the rare Onkyos to actually EXCEED its rated power in real-world tests... whereas the x008 series don't even come close. The 805 really was a fluke that has only been matched by Onkyo's highest-end flagship receivers since.
In fact, the x008 line doesn't even stand up to the x007 series, and the equivalent to the TX-NR1007, power wise, would be the 3008 or higher because they nerfed the amp section on the new line.
I have the 1007 and I dig the added channels (though I preferred height over width channels in my room). That said, if you're not going to use the additional channels and have a decent sized room, I think the best value is to stick with the 808 and use the additional money to invest in an external amp.Equipment list:

If you're right Kuntasensei. I'm in total agreement. The reason I bought my 805 years ago was precisely because it was such a fluke. And I'm sure the new processing is an improvement. But I am more than happy with the older boy for now.

You can always add more power if the avr isn't cutting it by adding external power but what you can't change is the features and processing. I've owned the 805 for little over a year but id take the newer stuff over it anyday. Just my opinion. -

Oh, I don't disagree. I went from the 705 to my 1007 without regret. But it is a shame that Onkyo's x008 line doesn't seem to be capable of more than about 65w/ch with all channels driven. Not that you really need more than that in the average room with efficient speakers, and not that there are ever any situations where all channels are driven to that extent, so the new Onkyos are still capable AVRs. But when you compare the amp section to the much-lauded 805 (which can do an honest 173w/ch in 2-channel and over 130w/ch with all channels driven), it's just unfortunate that they can't offer that level of amplification in even their highest end flagship AVR today.Equipment list:

So I upgraded from the TXNR808 to the TXNR1008. Based on the reaction at the store, it sounds like I probably have another 30 days to trade up again, just in case they put the TXNR3008 on sale. They would need to sell it with a 35-40% discount. Hey, I just got the 1008 for 34% off, so you never know. All I know is my wife is just as annoyed as I am... just give me the 3008 for less than $1,500cad and be done with it already!Main Home Theater

True... but keep this in mind:
USA Onkyo Website:
608 = $599
808 = $1,099
1008 = $1,399
3008 = $2,099
Canada Onkyo Website:
608 = $700
808 = $1,300
1008 = $1,700
3008 = $2,400 (est based on visions.ca -$100)
I presume the extra cost is the shipping into Canada. If I were to ship it myself plus duty a 1008 based on your $799 would probably be about $1,199 when all is said and done (FedEx). Not to mention the 4 to 6 weeks to arrive.
It's nice that Visions lets me trade up within 30 days of purchasing. They probably appreciate the fact that I repackage the old unit exactly as I got it; and swap out the batteries and stickers from the new unit to the old unit to make it look untouched.
I swapped out the speakers twice, the receiver twice (so far), and had them lower the price of the sub (again) within thirty days. Over the whole package, I have saved 33% from MSRP.Main Home Theater

I love my 807 and it's abilities.....and I hear that the 808 is much better.....but if you want power you have to go external......my 807 is a TOASTER....and I only drive my heights with it.
My opinion only.....look to Pioneer elite sc line with ICE amps.......If I had a do-over.... that's what I'd buy."Making life enjoyable through expensive electronics." BillD
