More Newbie SDA Tweeter Questions

YO...my new-to-me SDA IIs came with one blown tweet and one that was distorting. I swapped out some tweeters from Polks 7's that I had around. One appears to be the new RD0194. The other appears to be the Sl 2000. So what I have now is the original sl 1000s in the stereo position on both speakers, a 2000 in one SDA position and a 194 in the other SDA position.
They sound amazing, but I'm not happy with this mix match.

So the question is, what to do next? Should I by a pair of 1000s to replace the two bad original tweets (and have them all 1000s) OR buy one new 194 so that the stereo tweets and SDA tweets match OR just buy four new 194s and replace them all? Possibly there is another option that I haven't thought of.

A followup question is, are the 194s a straight drop in replacement for the 1000s? They look to be a slightly different size/shape.

Thanks VERY much for any advice!

Yo... I like that. Anyway, I would replace them with the RDO-194. But I would only replace the Stereo Tweeter not the dimensional. It should be drop in as it was in mine. I have the same model speaker as you. I replaced all of my tweeters and later tried without the dimensional and have not looked back. They are totally better sounding without the dimensional tweeter.

For a bit of history. In the later versions of these speakers SDAII Polk eliminated that tweeter as it added to much ting to the sound and made them tiresome to listen to for extended periods.

If you don't feel comfortable with the new tweeter I would suggest the SL2000 as better sounding overall.

OK...first update is that I took your advice and disabled the two dimensional tweeters (but left them in place which I assumed was needed to keep the hole plugged). I agree this sounds terrific and interestingly enough the dimensional effect doesn't seem to suffer. So, currently, there are two mismatched tweeters in the regular tweeter positions (a 1000 and a 2000).

I ordered and recieved two new 194s from Polk to replace the 1000 and 2000, but noticed that the screw positions are slightly different (they are spaced slightly wider with the 194s). Any suggestions on how to handle this? I'm sure it has been done before...

    Thanks in advance!

EXCELLENT question Tool. You've been paying attention. What I did was take the 194 tweeter out of mounting plate and put it in one of the bad 1000 mounting plates. Since these are brand new I was hoping not to do that this time.

    Thanks again!

The mounting plate of the SL1000 fit the RDO tweeter? Please post pics.
    Ben
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

I must say...this is a sharp group! Another great question. The RDO didn't fit perfectly into the 1000 mounting plate, but it fit. One of those deals where three screws go in but you have to angle the fourth a bit. I'm fussy enough that I wouldn't have done it if it was too sloppy. I'll post some picks. I'm starting to think the easiest thing to do would be fill the existing holes and drill out new ones to match the new RDOs....

So the job was a little easier than expected although I may not have done it perfectly. After taking out the old tweeters, I simply installed the new 194s over top of the shallow routed hole for the old tweeters. Two screws went into new wood and grabbed fine. I used to longer screws to get them to grab in the two old holes. They are secure and sound great. I suppose the perfectionist would have opened up the routing for the old tweeters to make the new tweets flush, but that would have been a lot more work and I'm not sure there would have been an audible benefit. Once the covers are back on, obviously no visual impact. Thoughts?
