My Sony SS-M9's

Here are a few pics, as requested, of my Sony SS-M9's. The sides are a bit scratched, the bottoms are decent at best, but you don't see them, and the grills aren't great either. But the driver's are in perfect condition, and I love the smoothness of the speakers. They just shine where they aren't scratched. Any suggestions on what to do about the scratches that won't permanently mess with the speakers in a bad way?

Cool speakers. Hadn't seen a pair until I looked them up based on your other thread.

How deep are those scratches? Through the paint or not? If not, rubbing compound and polish might help. Might consult with a piano store to see how they recommend to repair the finish.

Also, there was some discussion here last year:

BTW, your grills look much better than mine did, but if you want to re-do them, 1-yard of black grill fabric from Madisound is more than enough to do both.

I'd love to hear your speakers. I have heard the 7s and they were wonderful. They do just about everything right and look great too. How do the 9s differ from the 7s?

The scratches are so obvious in the photos, I would say that there is no way they can be polished out, especially with a gloss black finish which would exagerate any flaws. My suggestion is to remove the drivers, cover the openings and connectors and take the speakers to a car paint shop and have them repainted.

    Cub -

I have no idea how they differ because I don't have the proper amplification yet. They are sitting in the living room looking good. I will report back when I have an idea of the differences. My idea is that the 9's will have a more substantial bass. I loved the neutral, natural sound of the 7's and thought the bass was tight, but not substantial (My only even remotely negative comment about them).

Jon - For that much trouble, I think I will live with the flaws. I think I can survive if they sound as good as I know they will :)

Worst case, try coloring in the marks with a sharpie ;) Sounds strange, but black shoe polish might help too. Maybe try it on a small section.

    Alright -

I've had the speakers for almost a month, had the amp for about two weeks, and FINALLY got it hooked up. I got a chance to critically listen to three of my typical reference songs, and I must say, I'm am absolutely blown away. I have never heard such detail, refinement, and excitement. The volume was on medium at the highest, in possibly the worst listening room you could possibly imagine (1 bedroom apartment) and under poor circumstances (Different lengths of wire/different IC's due to lenghth issues, speakers not evenly spread out, etc. etc. etc.) but I was still sitting on my couch with the biggest smile. It's been over a month since I've sit and just listened to tunes with no interruption (Other than MANY long drives of 3+ hours, which doesn't count of course, for critical listening). Once we move back into a real house, these will never leave. The Odyssey Stratos Dual Mono amp is VERY impressive to my ears. The entire rig is in my signature for those who care. Thanks for all the advice along my audio journey.

I have a set of SS-M9s... Oddly, it is finished different from yours. My set is black stained wood veneer and yours appears to be piano gloss finish...

Very nice! I've always wanted to get my ears on the SS-M9's. A friend of mine has a pair of the SS-M7's and they're a great sounding pair of speakers. They're the only Sony speakers I've ever heard that were worth a damn as far as sound quality goes.
