Building a Media Server

All right, I am getting near the limits of my 2 TB storage and I have not even started transferring my DVDs or Blu-Rays on to it. (I have all the lossless music, pictures, and DVD images backed up onto another 2TB USB drive too) So, I want to build my own Media Server that I can access with the various household laptops, and with a Boxee Box to the TV.

Thoughts? It doesn't need to be the cutting edge, but I will probably putt in 8 TB storage so that I have 4 TB of space...

Can I do it for $2-300 without the 8 TBs of storage?

I like the Synology line of Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices..

I just bought a DS210j (only holds 2 HDs.. max 2TB total i think), but there are other varieties that may be what you are looking for.

Easy to use and works flawlessly so far.. I just use an FTP program to transfer files to it and it is accessible to all my networked gear..

Just get a Micro ATX board w/ enough SATA connectors, a dual core AMD cpu, 2gigs of memory, small case, under 400 watt PSU and you are golden...

All should be able to be had for under 300ish
