I did a search and did not find a thread on this.

The new OPPO BDP-93 is coming out next week in advance sales.

Any thoughts on whether it is worth moving up from the 83?

I am not interested in 3d....2d is scarey enough.

This may be slightly off-the-track, but how is this company's name pronounced?
Do you do it as "Op po" or "Op o"?
    Thanks, Ken

I would wait a little while to make sure it is a solid unit. I don't like to buy the very newest. I like tried and true. You may want to look into 3D also.

That's cool, but cars don't usually breakdown in the first 1000 miles. All the 30 days does is give you time to break it in and see if you like it. It's not like he doesn't have a player.

    How do I pronounce OPPO?

The consensus of informed opinion is "OH no, OH Poe!"

The people at OPPO don't seem to care how you pronounce it.

    Found here,although its not official:

    http://watershade.net/wmcclain/BDP-83-faq.html#how-do-i-pronounce-oppo

So I guess it's like Oh-Poe. That's how I have always pronounced it anyways.

From the wiki, which is probably as close as we'll ever get to an answer:

I just got in Cali last night. Where are they located? I'd still have to ship it out though. They are 7 hrs from me, I'll pass on picking it up.

Comparing it to the 83 I would say it is better. Though I am not going to jump on the get it early band wagon. I will wait for one or two firmware updates to come out first.

Audiogon already had a bunch of 83's listed this morning and with the 93 being $500.00 maybe those 83's will drop to around $300 used.. here's hoping.
    Main 2ch -
    BlueSound Node->Ethereal optical cable->Peachtree Audio Nova 150->GoldenEar Triton 2+
TT - Pro-ject Classic SB with Sumiko Bluepoint.

and that begans after the sale to the public, not after your early purchase if you make one....sign up might be over on that....maybe this has been posted already....

OPPO admits that the early purchasers are to help with firmware updates....you'd kind of think that companies would run enough tests to know the equipment...but maybe not...I had to sed my 83 in after the Harry Brown movie blew it up....and I also had a problem with the optical out...door got messed up and had to do work around to keep cable in....forgot to have OPPO fix that....their turn around on the fix was extremely fast....and email response in about 2 hours....

I'm still wondering how you pronounce their name. Anyone had to call their customer support line? Just wondering how they say it when they answer the phone. :)

Pronunciation...is a good question. I really don't know myself. But I pronounce it with a Southern European spin....so OhPoe. But that's not the way I've heard any other member here pronounce it. I really wish I'd paid attention to the Chinese pronunciation for comparative purposes.

In any case...looks like Oppo is keeping up with the game. The upgrade game--that every other major player is also racing against! Hope Sherardp and Face can hook up on this. Keep it in the family.

According to ppl on the AVS thread, it's "Oh Poe" like cnh said. I have called their CS and if I remember correctly, that is the way they said it. I however, I always say "ah poe."

It is pronounced as CNH mentioned. The O is long as in Ohio. Posting the 83 up for sale here shortly.

Not sure why anyone would drop the 83 in lieu of the 93. New chipset might or might not be an improvement (which how many of us can really see), analog audio 2 channel = gone, added streaming (still a low rez proposition)might attract some, but not me...and...3D support, that's not going to be a near future option for me, if ever. I was happy with the 83 and now the SE and just don't see the attraction of the 93 (unless I've missed something).

i bought the 83 for the internal decoding and multi-channel analog outs. The SE is supposed to made a big upgrade there. I have not gotten the upgrade. Anyone know if the 93 will have this upgraded analog feature....I've read the website, but missed this if it was there.

Wht does 2 channel analog out matter (though I use it for Cd's played in the 83)...won't the two front chanels in the multi-channel out give the same effect?

OK I thought that he meant no analog outs. Need those stereo outs for SACD:wink:

The audio specs for the 83 and 93 look the same, so I assume the Cirrus Logic DACs are the same or similar. The SE's DACs are a different animal as are the PS and OP amps. If you don't have an 83, the 93 is a nice upgrade for the new features. If you don't want or need the new stuff, then I'd stand pat with an 83.

Woohoo, got my BDP-93 yesterday, plugged it in today, first impression was the video output definitely won over my old BDP-83SE's performancẹ: I rewatched both "The Last Airbender" and "Celine - through the eyes of the world" BD's, the video clarity and sharpness is a clear win over the BDP-83SE. Of course it's just my eyes, others may have different opinions
I haven't tried any SACD yet, so no comment on audio.
I also plugged in the included wireless-N dongle, connecting to my wireless network is a breeze. And the second time I turned the BDP-93 on, it automatically popped up checking for updates. It's a plus since I can now get rid of a CAT5e cable from my setup
I noticed in the back of the BDP-93 also got an IR-in port which a 3.5mm mono cable can be used to plug into an IR sensor. This is good! I'll try that to get rid of the front IR sticky one in a few days.
