The card that gives cash back for using it, then pay it off every month (you will be referred to as a "dead-beat" by the CC company due they don't kmake any interest off you). Any other type of rewards program just leads to more spending IMO.

The biggest reward is when you don't carry a balance.

We never carry a balance, but would like to receive a reward based on the $ we spend if there is such an animal.Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend.

I'm happy with my Capitol One cash-back card. I don't carry a balance, so the interest rate isn't any concern. I don't fly hardly anymore, so I was only interested in cash reward cards.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Discover is my favorite followed by amex blue card. I make a few hundred a year on discover and ALWAYS pay it off completely. That is the key.Vinyl, the final frontier...

I like my airlines CC.. earning miles was more cost-effective overall for me since I fly several times a year to do various things.

Discover. They pay me money for using the card. Hard to beat that.
...as madmax said above, use it to manage cash flow rather than as a credit card per se; i.e., don't run a balance. -
I'm an American Airlines/Citi guy myself. I have tons of miles, hopefully I'll get to use them before AA goes out of business...

Is the 5% on BP gas only?Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend. -
I have one that gives me Subaru Bucks (I obviously own a Subaru). They give you $100 at a time and can be used for a new purchase or service. I have already received well over $1000 and have not "paid" for service on my car in a while.
I also love to read so I have another from Barnes & Noble. They give me a $25 gift card whenever I reach x amount.
I also never carry a balance. -

Yes, for BP gas only. You get no rewards if you use the card at another gas station. They did have a card that would give you 3% on any gas company but I don't see that one right now.Sunfire TGP, Sunfire Cinema Grand, Sunfire 300~2 (2), Sunfire True Sub (2),Carver ALS Platinum, Carver AL III, TFM-55, C-19, C-9, TX-8, SDA-490t, SDA-390t -

Penfed Platinum - 5% cash back for gas purchases (any brand). Best part: its cash credited automatically at the close of every statement. This card is available today for any members of Pentagon FCU. Even non-military can join by joining some military family association thing for a very small one time fee.
Chase Rewards Plus - 5% cash back for gas (any brand), groceries, and drug store purchases. Have to save up for $100 increments, mailed checks. Not as easy as Penfed, but cash nonetheless. Card is no longer available for new customers and will mostly likely be phased out soon even for me. Keeping my fingers crossed as long as possible.
Citi Forward - Points based. 3x points for every dollar spent at restaurants, movie theaters, and best of all.... Amazon.com. However Citi points basically suck. Best redeemable point conversions are 10k for $100 gift cards (Macy's, Dillards, Sears, etc). Card is still available to new customers I believe.
Of course, never carry a balance so who cares what the interest rates are. I easily surpass $1k a year in rewards. -

I'll receive over $500 cashback bonus from Discover this year. While a few places might give a discount for cash, I doubt I'd have saved that much. And, I can often redeem the cashback bonus amount for about 25% more. I pay my balance in full each month. -
don't like credit card
can get in deep trouble if someone get to buying too much.

I have the Bank of America, 1% back on everything. No limits. Oh yes and I pay it off every month.

I have used Am Ex Starwoods and the Sheraton hotel reward card to get free hotel rooms. There is an annual fee but we normally cancel the card before the 12 months is up and wind up with 2 or 3 nights free. Also have used airline cards to get cash applied toward flight tickets...same thing with the annual fee though so unless you were to travel a lot it doesn't make sense to us to pay the annual fee.
A few years ago we used one of each(hotel & airline) card and we basically flew round trip to Seattle with 2 nights in hotels for about $100 total cost out of our pockets. Of course we NEVER carry a balance on any card.
My wife was worried about doing this subscribe/cancel thing affecting our credit score but I've been doing this for a few years now and really has not had much affect. However, this is not something you would want to consider if you were looking at a major purchase(house, etc) in the near future....lenders get a little nervous seeing this acitivity.Yep, my name really is Bob.

These cards give cashback because they know the mentality of the majority of credit users will lead them into debt. Just don't have that mentality.
Good point though, using plastic doesn't "hurt" like using cash. I've bought audio gear using plastic but have also paid cash (I have the cash for it either way). $4K paypal for a preamp, no problem, no second thoughts. Going to get $4K from the bank for money orders, well, it hurt like hell and I had to do some soul searching.

I only have one CC now. It's used for big purchases or emergency only. Everything else is cash. My fav rewards card is a paper card the barista punches everytime I go in. after 6 drinks I get one free.
-
Just came across this one...it's a Discover that gives you decent cash back rewards, 6 mo no interest intro offer and if you spend $500 within the first 3 months(ez right?) you get $100.

Cool, thanks. I knew about the Amex, but not the MC. As MC is accepted more places, it may be a better alternative. I like the idea of building my Fidelity accounts .anonymouse wrote: »Fidelity Investments offers an American Express card which consistently pays 2% cash back on all purchases, and a Mastercard, which offers 1.5% till $15K in annual spending, and 2% thereafter. No games, no categories to spend in - its just flat rates that go back every month into your investment account. I believe Schwab has something similar. I much prefer these to the ones where the categories keep changing. Its a credit card to me, not an arcade game.Husband, Father, Son, Brother, Friend.

I use my American Express for everything. All purchases big and small which I pay off every month without fail. When I buy tickets for a show or sporting event on Ticketmaster I usually use the points for the purchase. It's easy they just ask if you want to use your points, I click yes and the tickets are free.My Main Gear
