I am about to (Hoping not to jinx it) purchase some sony SS-M9's which are 4 ohms and VERY power hungry. I'm thinking my ST-70 will not handle them. I need to search what is available in the 4 ohm - 300+ wpc (The more the merrier) power amp. If anyone has a suggestion, or has something that fits the bill, let me know. Thanks,

James

Budget---good question. I was thinking perhaps around 600 bucks or so. Obviously the Wyred4Sound looks out - at least the new ones that are around 2,000. To be honest, I woul dhave to sell what I have now before I buy, so a lot has to do with how much I get can get for some of my stuff.

B&K reference 200.2, 4420, 2220. Should be able to find one of those in your price range. I own the 2220 and it puts out 350-375 in 4 ohms (75 amp peak to peak). Very powerful amp. I run my martin logans with ease with them and they are 4 ohm speakers also.

I would recommend the ST-500, which can be purchased used for around $1200, new $1500. But that's still above your budget.

    James,
I really hope you get those speakers. You will be moving into new territory with them and my advice would be to save up for awhile and see if you can double your budget.

I honestly don't think many amps in the $600 range will really do them justice. Maybe a Parasound HCA-2200ii or a really low selling McCormack DNA-1. If you can get up to the $1000-1200 range, you can probably snag a Halo A21, a DNA-225, a Classe 25, or a Belles 350A, all of which would make the SS-M9 proud.

I would go with a Parasound HCA-2200II. 385x2 into 4 ohms and a very solid reliable amplifier. Just have to keep your eyes open.

Adcom is too grainy for the M9; the Rotel probably would melt down trying to drive the M9. As was already pointed out, the Parasound is a choice at that price.

I'd have public sex with a real dog if I could own a mint pair of those Sony. Shame you can't keep the little ones for use down the road somewhere. Or as surrounds.

    Hey BillbillW,

Do you think a 100wpc NAD 2200 has enough roast beef behind it to be up to the task?

Nope. BTW, the SS-M9 are ~89dB efficient, but the problem is they run 3 ohms from 10kHz on up. It brings out the harshness in lower quality amps.

    Outlaw M2200 mono block - it's rated at 300w for 4ohms.

Amazon has 'em for $325 plus S/H direclty from Outlaw.

Check audiogon as well. There is a set of four and I believe the seller is letting them go individually for $250 ea, or best offer - warranty is transferable.

I've had two for under a week and am very impressed so far - great sound - great build quality.

Class D? Not up to the quality of the SS-M9. You guys need to remember these were $3500 speakers in the late 90's and they were considered a steal at full price by the reviewers. (Stereophile Class B, barely missed being Class A)

These are the type of speakers that deserve near reference quality components in every step of the chain.

There's nothing wrong with the newer class D amps. Some prefer them to A and A/B. FYI, Outlaw monoblocks are a hybrid Class G/AB.

Regardless, I don't think anyone would put Outlaw amps in the category of reference quality for a 2-ch system. They are home theater oriented.

Sunfire Stereo 300~2 doubles down to 600wpc at 4 ohm. This might be a good option, but it will be a tad more than 600 bucks.

I have a minty Crown DC-300A from around 1982 that is rated at 155 wpc @ 8 ohms and 240 wpc @ 4 ohms. Someone on AK told me that his DC-300A tested out at 200 wpc @ 8 ohms. My amp was recently serviced to check DC offset and install RCA output jacks to replace the 1/4" jacks. This amp is a beast at 45 lbs. I will be driving from NW Pa. to Philly after Xmas. The photos were taken before the RCA jacks were installed.

    George -

I may give you my speakers to see you publicly humiliate yourself :)

Cosmetics is 'Little' concern, but always a bit :) Used is perfect. I have no time now, but am doing some research on what you have all said. Thanks, and keep it coming.

Reason I asked about cosmetics is that I have a Crest 4000 amplifier that has seen better days but was recently gone through by a shop in Seattle and after replacing a few parts it was good to go. It's stable down to 4 and 2 ohms.

Well, based on the OP's $600 budget I don't think he's going to get anything along the lines of Goldmund

    Hence my Outlaw suggestion.

I've been talking to James privately and I think he realizes he might need to increase his budget to get him where he wants to be. He might have a line on a McCormack that would give the Sonys some pretty good power.

If you could find a McCormack for anywhere near his budget, thats a steal. The DNA 500 would be my choice, but I have never seen one under 2 g's.
If your Sony's are power hungry John, you need current, not necessarily watts. Look into some used Musical Fidelity amps too, or even a used B&K would drive those puppy's just fine.
