You can use an external hard drive for your own media, but not for game-related stuff like save games or install-to-disc. Plus, some games like Halo: Reach don't let you use all the features unless you have the hard drive, and stuff like Netflix, Zune, etc. requires it as well. Get the 250gb 360 instead.Equipment list:

Prior to April 2010, you could only use an external harddrive for media. Since the update, you can connect an external hd or flast drive to your xbox and use it like an internal harddrive. I have borderlands and some demos on my external hd and it runs perfectly fine. If you buy the 4gb, just remember that even if you hook a 500 gb hdd up to it that you'll only be able to use 16 gbs of it. When I hooked mine up and formatted it, it said that it failed the test, but it works fine. Most external harddrives will fail, but work without any issues.
Here's a link with more information: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/storage/
If it were me, I'd just spring for the 250 gb console, but if you already have an external hdd, this is the cheaper route. -
Oh, yeah... I forgot they opened up hard drives to 16gb when they added the flash drive compatibility. But still, the 250gb is the better option overall, because SATA is faster than USB. Good catch though, man.Equipment list:

Is the new xbox 360 SATA instead of USB? The old ones were SATA drives, but USB interface since it technically just snapped on the top - that's why you could use the transfer kit they had.Main Surround -

You can use flash drives to install games on them. You often will get slighter better loading times. I might buy a fast 16GB flash drive to try it , even though I play a lot less than what I used to do :frown:

The old drives snapped onto the top, but the header it plugged into was modified SATA. The new drives are straight SATA, so no special plug. The transfer kit is basically a USB to SATA adapter, which isn't as fast as straight SATA.Equipment list:
