DCM 712 SUB, Driver replacement suggestions?

I just got this sub on CL and it sounds great at low volume, BUT... it clips at moderate to high vol. The driver itself looks to be a medium-long throw 8" woofer coupled with a 12" passive. Btw this sub is a Xmas present and I cant exactly give a gift that only halfway works, and at the price I got it for it would be dumb of me to take it back. Any suggestions on cheap replacement drivers, or is there anything I can do to make the cone not rattle? Thanks guys
