I've had this sore throat for two days now, I can't even talk.. but I have a presentation to give tomorrow (final presentation, no excuses). I've tried everything I can think of. My skill at doctoring amounts to taking everything in the medicine cabinet.

I've been taking prednisone, proventil, albuterol, advair, nasonex, oscillococcinum, sambucus, some OTC "immune system booster", vicks vapo spray, and probably some random others for two days now and nothing is working.

I even gargled apple cider vinegar (that **** is disgusting!) as suggested online.... Anyone have ideas?

Big fan of gargling warm salt water myself, that and drinking cold apple juice always help me

My idea is this; every medication you have listed is to address the symptoms (congestion, pain in throat, etc.) Did they do a culture of your throat? If not, you should ask for a strep test. Sounds like you could be suffering from strep throat. In which case, you would need an antibiotic.

I haven't actually been to a doctor. Everything I am taking has been sitting in the cabinet. I have also been taking tetracycline ... it's some form of antibiotic.

edit: googled tetracycline and strep, and it says it's been known to help

Drink OJ and hot tea, and wait it out. If symptoms worsen, see a doctor.

WTF?! Prednisone? Are you for real? You better have some type of autoimmune condition to take that stuff. It will keep you sick longer since it SUPRESSES your system.

This thread is a joke. Just talk to your teacher and they'll see that you can't talk.

That is a LOT of drugs to take in a 2-day period. Seriously, wtf is wrong with you?? Sometimes you get sick and have to wait a few days for it to pass. Drugs aren't magic and can't heal everything instantly.

Mix honey with the apple cider, and lay off the meds dude. Not any of them will help with a sore throat.

Anything up there, in your list that has any zinc in it? Go with zinc lozenges and Jd's and messiah's suggestions.

There is a Chinese Herbal medicine...which, unfortunately, I can't remember the name of...I've never seen it in the U.S. but I've taken it and it can REDUCE all swelling in 24 hours--but there are side-effects associated with its potency...it disrupts your sleeping patterns for a couple of weeks?

    Rest...get well!

    Thanks guys!

Nah, none of those, but I take 12 other pills every morning and one is a multivitamin with a fair amount of zinc.. is that enough? I'm gonna go get some tea from the store. I'd be interested in that asian stuff, it's got herbs in it... it's gotta be good for ya... but I don't know if I can take any more insomnia... I've been on ambien for the last 3 months and still can't sleep!

edit: oh.. only 15mg of zinc... it says that 100% DV's ... but probably not enough??

You obviously have an underlying airway problem. Either COPD or chronic bronchitis. Go see a doctor, bro.

    Either that or start smoking.

What you need to do is get some zinc in your throat with Vit-C/zinc/echinacea type lozenges--available at any drugstore. The lozenges are NO cure but promote faster healing and recovery. But you may have something more 'severe' as noted above? And if that's the case...you'll need stronger prescription meds.

And while we are on the subject of remedies. I know this may sound dumb. But for heartburn....a temporary relief....a spoonful of regular mustard works wonders too.

Zinc has never been shown to have any immediate effect on anything. Then again, you obviously don't care what has been proven or not, since you jsut throw anything and everything in your body without any thought of side effects or drug interactions, so... good luck.

And unless you have cancer or are 80... 12 pills a day? WTF?!

I agree about seeing a doc.

And when you do, ask if they will give you a script for "Tussian Pearls"(spell) to coat your throat tonight and help you to sleep.

Go to a doc if you can. Throat issues can get serious if not treated if treatment is called for like shawn 474 and others here in this thread said.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

That's what I was going to suggest. About a 1/5th you won't even care you have a sore throat.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

Make sure you let the doc know all the crap youv're been taking as well. Some drugs don't mix. Prednisone? Not supposed to stop taking that suddenly, usually you taper off.

Even if any of those meds did work for your condition, it's probably going to take more than 2 days.

As a constant Prednisone user I agree, however if you are taking a small dosage its not as big a deal. If going from something like 50+ mg to nothing then yes thats a problem.

Anything 10 mg or under I wouldnt think its an issue since normally they taper you in either 10mg or 5mg doses (or at least thats how they normally do it with me)

Also for some treatments with it like Poison Ivy you start @ 40 then 30 the next day then 20, so you can taper quickly if needed.

I think the problem is with going from a large dose over time to no doses.

But I am by no means a medical expert, just someone who is on and off it all the time

I'll probably see a doctor if I'm not good by friday.

Dude, seriously. I know I can come off as a dick, but I'm honestly trying to help you here. You listed at least NINE relatively serious drugs in that first post that you've taken over the span of 48 hours. You have this thing called a liver that filters all this crap out, and if you throw enough stuff at it in a short period of time, it doesn't get happy. And even though you're young and think you're invincible, when your liver gives out a sore throat will be the LEAST of your problems.

Either pick a drug and stick to it, or just wait it out. No one seems to realize that getting sick for a couple of days is NORMAL and no amount of drugs will work better than a little rest.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Nah, man it's ok I didn't think you were being a dick.

Unfortunately, insomnia has got the better of me for the last 3 months or so. I've been taking ambien, but it took 3 to put me down enough to sleep well... the doctor isn't being very liberal with the prescription pad, so I gotta stick to 1.

I'm probably gonna try the things like salt water and honey tea... perhaps the zinc, but that seems harmless.

Be careful with that damn Ambien! I was prescribed that last year. My wife got to noticing food left on the counters and the fridge left wide open some mornings. Turns out I was eating and doing whatever else during the night and didn't even know it!

Whoa, that's crazy. I can usually get to sleep with it but it only lasts a few hours. I think the most I ever took was four. Some weird dreams at four, and I looked real funny in the mirror... had some trouble walking.

My doctor hasn't given me any other options, no idea why.
