Ohm load question for Onkyo receiver/Polk LSi center/surround

Hey:

I have a quick question about the Onkyo NX-NR900 and the Polk LSiC. The specs on the website state that this is only a 6 ohm receiver.

However, the center and rears are 6 ohm output. However the LSiC and LSiFx are 4 ohm speakers. Is there any problem with this? I just noticed it as I was browsing through the specs.

Thanks for all your help

No problem. It will run them all fine. Just make sure you have some clearance above the top of the receiver, to dissipate heat soak and heat buildup.

    Welcome to the forum. :)

Nice receiver, you get the silver model?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I used to have an Oink TXDS-575 (75w/ch). I had the LSi9 mains and RT center and surrounds. I didn't have any problems. I'm not sure about 5 LSi speakers though. If your receiver has pre outs, you might want to take advantage of it if you want LSi all around.

    Organ,

How do you feel about the mating of the Lsi's and the Rt's? I have the 7's as mains and the 25i's as surrounds. I feel the RT's do a good job, the only time I notice a difference is when I play multi-channel audio music.

I know in the future I will be getting the nine's or another set of 7's so they will all match.

    Avalanchefan,
It really depends on how picky you are about speaker matching. 2ch is way more important to me than 5.1. But I do enjoy HT a lot more using 5.1. The thing that stood out most was the mids and dynamics of the LSi compared to the RT's. The LSi sounds much cleaner so the sound I got wasn't as seamless across the front soundstage. The RT's actually sound brighter than the LSi when all the speakers are playing. I didn't have any beef with the surrounds though. It was harder to tell the difference.

Are you planning on upgrading your mains as well?

Well I am debating whether to go all Lsi7's with the LSiC, or get the LSi9's for the mains and move the 7's to the rear. So basically no, I will not get two more pairs of speakers to replace my setup. I will probably go with the 9's, but you would really be amazed at how well the 7's sound. They are an incredible speaker.

BTW- I usually listen to 2 channel audio when playing music. Hardly ever 5.1 because the difference is so significant. But when I play movies, or heck even the new Led Zepplin DVD, I cannot tell the difference. Very strange indeed. Oh well whatever floats our boats right?

Any way's it was cool reading you system. Glad to see you like the 9's!

J9_ls1: Let me put my two cents worth in here regarding Onkyo and LSi's.
I am not sure about your receiver but I have(currently for sale) an Integra 7.1 receiver that I matched with LSi's and they did not match well. Even though the Onkyo/Integra specs show they almost match the 4ohm LSi's, they don't. At higher volume levels, my receiver clipped every time...around 95db (even in 2 channel). Upon further investigation, I discovered the Onkyo's won't handle the power hungry LSi's. This subject has been discussed many times on this and other forums. I ended up changing to Rotel separates, and have never looked back.
If your combination match, you are fortunate.
    Good luck

Yep, I can confirm this as well. I have a DTR 9.1 at reference volume for 5.1 (DD/DTS) my 9.1 clips and power protection kicks in. However lower the volume to -5 thru -3 from reference, it works very well.

Since I have a pretty expensive receiver, I'm just planning on getting a 7 channel amp. And if i decide to get a pre/pro, than I am ready to just add on to it.

heres my 2 cents. I had a Onkyo TXDS 595 driving LSic, LSi15, & LSiFX speakers. It sounded ok at lower vol. As I turned up the vol it got louder but sounded worse. Id turn the vol down not beacuse it was to loud but beacuse it sounded bad. With the advice of the forum members I purchased a receiver with more power & presto! The speakers woke up! With the 595 it sounded like the speakers were still in thier shipping box, with the new receiver they sounded like the boxes were removed & the speakers mover further apart. What a difference. Your Onkyo should drive the LSi's but not to thier full potential

That was a small Onkyo for the LSI's you had - just in Onkyo's defence. The 900 has twice the power your had. My 898 can play 7 channel reference level on my rt's all day long.

Your right the 595 has much less power than the 898. The 595 was rated at 85w 8 ohn & at 145 w at 4ohms Im almost sure that what the rating was. The 595 also has a switch on the back for 6omh & lower speakers. I dont know what the switch actually dose, but as per the manual if you ran speakers less than 6 ohm slide the switch to one side & the other side for speakers over 6 ohm. My 595 drove my rt800i mains, rt600i rears & CS400i with no problem at all even at higher vol. With the LSi speakers it drove them well but there was much improvement with a better receiver. I didnt realize how much better the LSi could sound with more power. My rsx1065 is rated at 100 w at 8 ohm but sounds much better driving the lsis. The 595 according to specs should have done a good job with the LSi speakers but it did much better driving the rti's. I learned nothing beats experience, the members guided me in the right direction & I purchased a great reciver & totaly enjoy my system!
