Beck's Sea Change is a must own. I'm also very fond of Glen Phillips' Abulum on DVD-A. And for sheer speaker-testing quality, Nickel Creek and Nickel Creek - This Side are fantastic on SACD.Equipment list:

I picked up a copy of Hotel California for $30 a couple of months ago. I'll sell it you for $150 It sounds great, but if that's seriously the going rate, mine may be for sale soon.
A couple of DVD-A that really show off the surround channels are:
Blue Man Group: The Complex
The Flaming Lips: At War With The Mystics
The Flaming Lips are not a group that I would play in my car and I don't think I've ever even listened to them on my 2-channel system, but the 5.1 mix is just awesome.
A couple of other good ones:
Steely Dan: Gaucho
Diana Krall: When I Look in Your EyesThings work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

Larry, get the mfsl and/or sacd. They both have stong points. Have not heard the vinyl. It may be better than both of the other formats. I would highly recommend the mfsl and sacd ones though.

My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

The sacd is better. I own both and can say without a doubt the sacd is better than DVD-A.

Emerson,Lake and palmer "Brain Salad surgery" DVD-A is very good also
by the way most of those prices are for NIB once opened they most of the time only go for 50-90bucks
I must of got mine at the right time as most were only 15-20 bucks I have thought about putting mine up but it hasn't happend yet.
my .02 I think the Metallica is just awful on the DVD-A something about it just does not sound good for me.
almost forgot AC Billion $ babies is good also -
If you're really curious....

Greg,
I picked this up on mofi 180gm vinyl at Twist n Shout Records today.. Fricking thing was pricey but what the hell.

No Problem Larry. I had a feeling the MFSL vinyl would be good. Glad you are enjoying it. The SACD should be about $45 to $60.00 to get it. It's worth the money though. How much was the MFSL vinyl?

Cool Larry! I hope you get it cheap. Sea Change is the best Beck album (IMO). He's got some other good stuff though.

After reading this thread at lunch I headed out to the local music shop to see what I could find. I found Nickle Creek This Side on SACD for $8 and REM Out of Time on DVD-A for $13. I have only listened to the Red Book CD versions of each so far but both even those are very well mastered.
I had heard good things of Nickle Creek but never listened to them before. The album is very unique. It isn't bluegrass as in the usual sense. It has a progressive feel and I'd say even hints of classical music (with a mandolin, fiddle {not a violin}, guitar and bass). The music is also very dynamic even on the CD layer with some rather cool percussions. I can't wait spin this one in the SACD player.Stan

skrol, you're gonna be very happy with Nickel Creek's This Side. Absolutely fantastic sound. Are you talking about Sea Change? Man, I own the DVD-A of this and it is one of the best sounding albums I own. I cant imagine the anything sounding better than the DVD-A. What makes the SACD superior in your opinion. If you can convince me, I might go out and try and get it. An amazing album in surroundd sound.
Tool, I can also second Hotel California. It sounds pretty damn sweet, though I cant believe its going for $150. I got mine for $30 on Amazon 4 years ago. Glad I got it then! I'd also recommend Marvin Gayes "Lets Get it On" and REM's "Document". I'd also add that Gaucho is the single best sounding album I own...period. The DVD-A in surround or 2 channel is mind blowing. I dont think the new Aja SHM-SACD of Aja even comes close and I LOVE that album very much.Music and Movie Rig

Hey All,
I was researching info about SHM-CDs and came across this thread. I decided to join the forum to offer up some observations about DVD Audio. I have the Hotel California DVD-A and really like it. I don't think I would pay $150 for it. I think I got mine for about $30 almost 4 years ago. The 5.1 mix is really nice.
I have most of the Porcupine Tree releases and they are incredibly well done. Steven Wilson, the leader of the group, is mixing the King Crimson catalog for their new 5.1 reissues. Don't have those yet. Anyone else?
I have Fleetwood Mac Rumours. Very nice. Not worth the out of print dollars it fetches. IMHO. Same with Foreigner's first album on 5.1.
The Doors box set is worth getting. The cds are all HDCD though they are not labeled as such. My Rotel cd player has that feature so that is how I found out!
I have the Genesis 1970-75 box set with SACD and DVDA. This is the import version and the only one worth having in my opinion. I got it from Amazon.uk for cheaper than the US non-SACD version. With shipping too!
One of my favorite 5.1 releases is from Toy Matinee. It is a DTS release. The redbook cd of this is fantastic to begin with. The 5.1 is just incredible! Go get it is all I have to say. -
I have most ofthe DVD-A's just mentioned. Rumours is pretty amazing for sure and with the addition of Silver Springs is pretty much a perfect album. I picked up Red by King Crimsn on DVD-A as well and Steve Wilson did an awesome job I must say. I have PT's Deadwing on DVD-A and it really rocks. Check it out!!Music and Movie Rig

Frank Zappa's two DTS releases are great.
Yes Fragile is crazy good. Again not worth the OOP money.
Yes Magnification is nice too. Why hasn't Close to the Edge come out in 5.1?
Led Zeppelin How The West Was Won smokes!
Grateful Dead's American Beauty and Working Man's Dead are essential.
Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon SACD is amazing. Not a DVDA, but the Alan Parsons quad mix is out there to download. Well worth the effort. It is a very unique mix with different takes which gives it a fresh perspective. At least it did for me. -
Dont' miss out on:

I see you are in Roanoke. My wife grew up there and that is where her family still resides. I'll probably be down that way for Christmas. Welcome to the Polk Audio forums.
I have Yes Magnification on HDCD and it is an impressive recording. Even in 2ch it has some good head logic going that gives it some 3D impression. Musically, it took me back to earlier Yes.Stan

Skrol,
It is good to be on this forum and to hear about cool things relating to my favorite hobby. I am from MD and moved down here to Roanoke a couple of years ago.
Magnification is one of their better later albums for certain. The HDCD does sound fantastic. I got to see them play some of it live at Wolftrap back in '01 w/ a full orchestra. Phew!
