Wow . . . why bother discovering young pop idols like Justin Bieber and Britney Spear when you can create the "packaged" artist on a computer! I bet 80% of that audience is dudes.

In what is surely a terrible omen not only for musicians but also the continued existence of the world as we know it, holographs are now playing sold out concerts in, where else, Japan.

Holographic idol Hatsune Miku is the creation of the group Crypton Future Media, using software from Vocaloid, and the group has put the avatar on tour with a live band. The sight of thousands of screaming fans waving glow sticks while the the holograph "performs" on stage is straight out of a science fiction novel.

The avatar is huge and incredibly realistic. Check out "her" concert performance below. More videos can be found here.

You know... at first I was appalled, then I got to thinking... this is like Britney without the drama... I wouldn't have to hear about this chicks insanity on the news.

And I'm sure the crowd is no more stupid/desperate than those watching other such pop singers.

Wow, that's amazing. Besides the light from behind shining through. I had no idea holograms could look so real, thick, tangible; I don't know how to describe it. And the motions were so realistic and fluid. very impressive.

So why do they bother with a real band?
    I assume there's a pre-recorded voice with the hologram.
Why not just play the whole thing back pre-recorded.
But, wait, it's Japan. Why would any logic apply to their pop culture?
We certainly don't have any. I guess whatever gets it done.
But really, why pay a live band? Play the Holo and the recording
and use the saved money to make it a really cheap concert.
Hey, I've just got a new business plan! Now all I need is a few
backers and a hot virtual girl.
