This technology seems vaguely familar, where have I heard of this before?

Deja vu? As noted, I think one or two of us may have read Mr. Polk's White paper on this!

SDAs...one of the most innovative designs that 'never' was for most of the public? So it gets 'rediscovered' at Princeton?

Is he the one who originally invented SDA back in the 60's IIRC?
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

BTW it looks like he is implementing some sort of Q-sound processor to get the effect. Polk did it with speakers, Carver with SH, and Q-sound via software. All bases seam to be covered.

BTW BTW The man whom I was speaking of either died or let his patent go. After 20 years Bob Carver and Matt Polk both jumped on it.

Yeah, right after I was a fry cook on Venus.

How's the Jimmy Durante impression going? Still working on it?

This seems a lot like the SRS circuitry found in many television sets. See:

Interest in 3D may just be the fire under Polk's toes to restart SDA?

SDA is NOT the SoundRetrievalSystem. Don't confuse SDA SRS with that same moniker. It's two totally different animals and simple meanings.

Polk SRS = Signature Reference System...or Series, depending on what we're talking about....what context, what year but don't get it confused with the other.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

It does look a lot like q-sound, but new "better" algorithms are still patentable.

If you read their white paper, it is pretty clear that they are going after a mathematically "perfect" crosstalk cancellation algorithm, but they found audio peaks that require a significant signal to overcome (+30db!), so they have determined separate treatments for bands of frequencies to try to level off the 3D playback.

So, sort of a x-over + algorithms, rather than a single algorithm, which reduces the bass rolloff and high frequency artifacts that are present in existing solo algorithms. Still has all the usual 3D sound problems of listener position, etc. Still cool as hell in my book.
