I don't want to see 1.6 terabytes on dvd sized media..... I want to see a use for it. I would like to see a TV with higher resolution than my 15.6 inch computer monitor for starters.

Why are people still futzing around with disc's?I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

thats what I want to know. Lets get into things like SD cards or USBs or something.
Something I can drop on a curb and not worry about it not playing because the damn thing scratched.

Because we still prefer discs to the alternative of a neural port being drilled into the base of our skulls perhaps?:biggrin:The Gear... agreed cody, but you gotta remember, it takes human interaction (most times) to scratch a disc. a usb hard drive can die on a whim. i'd say blu-ray is a bit more secure than a hard drive. let's not forget about static shock, either. right now i use usb hard drive, blu-ray and internal sata hard drive.

Just as we were all getting used to watching movies on Blu-Ray, Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia has developed a DVD that holds 1.6 terabytes of data - or about 2,000 movies. There is nothing like having your entire movie collection on one disc.
What math are they using?
A regular DVD movie disk (menus, extras, etc) weighs in around 7GB. For 2,000 DVD movies, you'll need 7GBx2,000=14,000GB which is roughly 14 terabytes (minus overhead and byte conversion).
A regular Blu-ray movie, including menus, extras, and multiple sound formats, weights in at around 25GB so that's going to be roughly around 64 Blu-ray movies on a 1.6TB disk (minus overhead and byte conversion). I'm sure some of you have more than 64 Blu-rays.
Maybe they're watching low-rez avi movies?
I wouldn't mind seeing a 1.6TB DVD disk but if the burn rate is 52x, I'm going to be sitting there for years backing up my movies and IIRC 52x is near max speed before the disk blows up in the burner. Read that somewhere awhile back but I don't recall where. They'll have to come up with a new burn method. -
What I see is buying a few disks and having to unlock the titles you want.Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
Thanks

Ten years from now all the movies will come from India or China.
That covers about 2/3 of the earth's population."The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson -

I can't remember where I read it, but a couple of manufacturers have already made higher resolution televisions. The problem is that people are actually getting headaches and symptoms similar to car sickness when watching for extended periods of time.
My memory is horrible, but I'll try to backtrack and find the article. I almost wanna say it was from Cnet...HT: RTi8s, CSi3, RTi4s, HSU ULS-15, Pioneer Elite VSX-23TXH, Sunfire Cinema Seven.

you have to admit that the strong coating on blu-rays is pretty scratch-resistant, at least compared to regular dvd. the scratch-resistant coating was a factor in helping blu-ray beat out hd dvd, imho.

I think these tech heads need a dose of reality. While cool and all, it's not practical to have 2000 movies on one disc. What if the dog gets a hold of it ? You have to buy your whole movie collection again ? Every time you want to buy a new movie, do you need another piece of hardware to down load to that disc ? If so, how much will that cost ?HT SYSTEM-

I 'm getting to the point where the things I buy now will last as long as me, But I hope not. In 10 years I won't spend much on the latest and greatest.
-
and this will also soon be obsolete
-
I think it's already obsolete for movies. Be nice for doing very large backups, although you'd probably grow old waiting for 1.6TB to be written to disc. I'd rather use a hard drive for that amount of data.

I have no idea...never messed with BR. I hope so though!
I know a friend of mine had a call of duty disc that was heavily scratched and he wet sanded it and buffed it out. I never in a million years wouldve thought it worked, but I watched him do it and put it in the computer.
