Well I was kinda thinking khoregon might have a go at building his own jig.
Yeah me too (but thanks for the kind words Mark). I don't think it would be cost effective with two way shipping to fix drivers except for one's self or unless they were an especially rare beast. And even then there's no guarantee that the VC wasn't damaged or some other issue, etc.
Building a jig of your own will involve a little cost as you will need a Tap and Die set, or at least a partial one (for the thread you need), but we can all use an excuse to buy more tools right? The cost of the parts is probably less than $10--but it would be usable for potential future repairs. This project would be for somebody that doesn't mind a little upfront expense and DIY work no doubt.____________________

Don't give up yet. Those can still be some amazing speakers!

I talked to Mike and Jim at Circuitshop.com and they can redo the polk MW drivers for about $35 each if needed.
I recommend them highly for their workmanship. Jim does a large percentage of the repairs and is definitely a master craftsman at his trade. -
I'd just buy a new one unless they were unavailable but nice to know. Eventually a driver is either going to be disco'd, obsoleted or not available for many months....that's when the option sounds not only affordable but very useful.
That jig is a great idea and has been worked by a few members over the years. I should dig mine out just to stare at it again.
HB27 - If you can ask them to contact me offline, just highlight me, perhaps we can get them listed online here at Polk. I've been trying to get Toolforlifefan added to the sidebar marketplace for his rings work as well. That would be a nice clickable option for vintage searchers and a nice plug for the business I'm sure.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Will do. I'll send the link now and call Jim and Mike tomorrow after I get out of the VA.

Hello Rev.,
Here's an update on my Polk Monitor 10 rebuild saga.
I got the terminal cup you sent. Thank you. It appears to be a match.
I also bought two MW 6500's on Ebay, but unfortunately, one arrived frozen. (So I ended up returning both of those). I gather that others have also experienced the magnets of these older MW's to slip in transit.
Meanwhile, I acquired some other generic (no brand name on them) 6.5 inch midwoofers, but after some consideration, I'm not installing them (primary reason: They don't fit snug into the openings).
Polk Audio has quoted $60 for each new MW 6503 plus shipping. I also looked at Dayton replacements which are $19.90 each: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=295-305&vReviewShow=1
So, here's a speculative question for those of you with ears of experience:
If I have two Daytons in one Polk 10 monitor and the two original MW 6500's in the other, to what degree will they sound unbalanced--or substantially different from each other? (Assuming I like the finished speakers and keep them, I will be noticing the audio long after I have forgotten the extra $80).
yrs,

I have not tried the Daytons personally, but I would speculate that they would sound very different, because they are rated for 30-4000 hz, which is significantly less than the full range polk 65** (which I think is rated from 20-26000).
So, you are going to miss out on a whole range of mids with that particular dayton. The secret for harvesting from existence the greatest fruitfulness and greatest enjoyment is to live dangerously. - Nietzche -

Don't forget to mention that you're a Club Polk member and you'll get a discount (I don't recall how much though)____________________

I screwed that number up, should have been 2500hz, so the Dayton will cover the range through the crossover point. Try it and see, let us know how it turns out!The secret for harvesting from existence the greatest fruitfulness and greatest enjoyment is to live dangerously. - Nietzche -
Fixed them. Replaced the cracked back with Rev. Hayes' terminal cup (Thank you!) and the Daytons fit fine. Had a friend over with steady hands who did a quick snug solder.
Hooked up to an old Rotel amp they sound...good. Very good. I'm going to hook them up to my Mac 1700 and see how they sound.

Thanks for the help. -
Yes, Lasareath, I agree--it is a little depressing-- the speakers don't match what the engineers intended--(these Monitor 10's are from 1980). I would have preferred original drivers (but one of the pair I ordered on Ebay arrived frozen). In retrospect, a good option would have been to order the 6503's new and direct from Polk. Nevertheless, now they are functional, excellent speakers, they have been resurrected. Next time...I may do it differently.
