Well, I screwed myself sending speakers

Well now I did it. I have sent and received large Polks (SDAs and RTA 12Bs) and never had a problem with ones I have shipped but have had one problem with ones I received. They were very poorly packed (thrown in the box) and one of the tweeter magnets was stamped off. Had two MW 6501s conme in a small box and one was frozen.

I recently sent out a very well packed pair of RTA12s (early). Even by the buyers admission they were well packed. guess what The left speajker now has both MW 6500s frozen and one magnet even fell off in the cabinet. I asked him to call me right away. Instead he went and filed a claim with Ebay which freezes your pPayPal account. Not good. They are insured so it will get handled. He is an older gentleman and really does not want to repack them for FeEx to pick up or accept replacement drivers.

Here is my favorite part. He claims he has had lots of speakers and there is no way the speakers were in working order when they left. The damage must be from high volume ect ect. As I worked in the CE biz for years and trained people in this stuff i tried to explain what happened here and that it has nothing to do with abuse . He said well there is no damage to the box. I explained that does not matter. THE FACT THE MAGNET IS LAYING IN THE BOTTOM OF THE CABINET SHOULD TELL YOU SOMETHING!! I think he understood??

I should have known there was trouble whe he did not want the stands because they did not tilt back?? I had to explain the tilt is designed into the speaker by having the tweeter set back.(RTA?????)

Even better I stated the shipping as $80 to $100. Ended up being $105 He only paid the $80 This is not counting $30 inpacking materials.

This wil work out but it is just another example of why not to ship large speakers.

One way to prevent the magnets from moving or falling off is to use some JB Weld. Before shipping any vintage Polk speakers, it would be a good idea to do that.

Boy,this is common, and I get uneasy everytime I sell something on Ebay. You can tell them til you're blue inthe face that it is for parts only, and what do they do? Cry, complain and call ebay, and then you are at fault, as the seller has no rights at all. Destroyed speakers are another issue, and one set arrived with the woofer pulled out of the front baffle. Sure, there was insurance from UPS, but what do you do with a 30-year old destroyed speaker?

    Keith,
    I've got a very nice 6500 you're welcome to.
You've treated me very good and it's the least I can offer IF you need it.

Keith is top notch and you'll find few if any better to deal with.

I bought my LS350 online and when it arrived, something was loose. I opened it up to find a big magnet rolling around the box. I was spooked by the sound and had similar feelings until I got on here only to find that it was a shielding magnet. I just popped it back on, and have 5 years of great sound.

Shame he's not local so you could take a few minutes to get them going again. Do you have any fellow Polkies in his area that owe you a huge favor?

I had sent two drivers to someone once and insured the package. Something happened during shipping that led to one of the magnets breaking free. Instead of redeeming the insurance, they decided to take apart the driver in question. They voided the insurance, of course.

I had the same problems with a turntable I sold on ebay. Claimed shipping damage and all. Just an excuse to rip you off. Don't expect a lot of help from PP. You will get emails telling you how to best avoid charge backs! Ebay is turning into a bad place to sell!

Bummer having shipping problems. I had a good experience in having large speakers sent to me. I purchased a pair of SRS about 1000mi away - not driving to pick them up. I got online and found a carpenter where the speakers lived and hired him to build two crates, pack them and deliver them to my shipper. Maybe a little scary, but everything went well. Crates well made, speakers well packed, thankfully a very pleasant experience. The whole-thing was under $500.
SDA SRS modded: X’ovrd, de-polyed, inductorized, interconnectorized, re-posted, dynamited, RDO’d, spiked, gasketed, ringed (Larry's), and grill cloth blinged! Done this on my own? Not a chance. Thanks to Raife and all who forged easy to follow upgrades. At least a 100% improvement in sound and my personal listening pleasure! :cheesygrin:Pass XP-10 preamp, Parasound A21 amp, Pioneer Elite DV-58AV (Ric Shultz modded), Audioquest Sky IC's, No longer need my Sunfire sub after mods...

Glad it's being taken care of Keith. Sending large speakers even in their orginal packing and boxes is a crap shoot at best with the gorillas handling them during shipping.

I think shipping crates on a pallet is the best way to go.

Yep... typical of the older Polk drivers, unfortunately :(. The glue is drying out on these magnets and causes problems during shipping. To the earlier poster who just lost a bucking magnet.... you're lucky.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Having the tweeter set back on the front baffle addresses time-arrival issues. Having a tilted speaker stand attempts to fire the tweets and mids towards a seated listener's ears. Two different things.

It sucks that your stuff got busted up.

On the small stands they came with from POLK the speakers tweeter is at ear level in the average chair. The 10s 7s and such are not hence they need the tilt back and to do a poor mans alignment of the VCs.
