I'm not looking for anything hardcore, seriously, and 5.1 would be the max....anyone have something vintage or mid-vintage laying around? I'm trying to match up a nice Sony ES CDP, black face w/ sideboards and wanted to stay in the same decade which would be late 80's...early 90's.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Here's a picture of the receiver you asked for. It is hooked up in my bedroom. I barely use it. It is in 9 out of 10 because it is used. It can handle 4 ohm speakers. Let me know if you want it. Thanks.

Bluecomet - The receiver arrived today, thanks for shipping it. However, not quite in the condition described. Not sure if it was the packing but the case is dented nicely in the front top left, left side and a front panel button is smashed into the chassis. The box looks fine but the packing was pretty light. Oh well, not much that can be done now. I'll take it apart and see what can be fixed.

That's a real shame. It left hear in mint condition. Apparently Fed Ex roughed it up or the people I gave it to at the drop off center did something. Normally there is insurance you receive automatically for items under a hundred dollars.

Insurance is automatically $100 but it is up to the seller to file the claim and prove the condition when it left and the amount of packaging that was used with pictures. Otherwise, they will deny the claim swiftly.

It looked good in those pics so it was likely a packing / shipping issue. I don't know how this particular item was packed, but it might be a good idea to throw up a "How to pack properly" thread as a sticky in the FS section, given the couple issues we've had recently.

Ultimately that responsibility lays on the seller to research and do that, but having the thread might re-enforce that idea and be a good reference.

    Just an idea...

I always take pics of the box after it arrives and more pics of contents after opening showing how it was packaged and condition of packaging materials , and of the equipment itself etc... Double boxing is a must, but so is using lots of bubblewrap, styrofoam peanuts, thick foam wedges etc all around to equipment... to increase the protection , because the package is going to be tossed and dropped a number of times, just happens. The more weight you're shipping the more protection is needed.

I completely agree. And would only ship 'double boxed' with extra padding (foam) and bubble wrap. I often use dozens of yards of old FOAM carpet matting (I have left from our last carpet install) as a final wrap around everything and I've shipped over 2000 miles with no problems....Pa. to Maryland should've been no problem. Got to pack that stuff for a Level 7 quake! After all you're shipping to 'doro'? Especially since it looked to be in reasonable shape originally.

Mark - you should really put together a video on how to pack gear. Your packing has always been bomb-proof and I think a lot of our members just don't realize what you need to do to pack gear and minimize the risk of damage.

Our member Snow is another bomb-proof gear packager! It took me 30 min with a carpet knife to see if there was actually a Marantz receiver somewhere in the middle of the box!

debussyj sent me a pair of LSiFXs and an LSiC, and both were packed in a manner where I could have comfortably dropped the package off of an 8 story building and not worried about the condition of the product inside. Let me put it this way: I had trouble fitting both boxes in my Yukon XL.

Go to Home Depot and get a 4x8 sheet of 1" styrofoam for insulating houses. Cut one piece for the bottom, fill the sides all the way around, and one piece on top. If it's real heavy, put two inches on the bottom. It works for just about everything.

That's not a bad idea and wish the seller of the Sony would have taken a class prior to sending it to me. You kinda figure that it's common sense to pack properly but it's reality that most folks don't really think about it.

We should at least put a rough guide to materials used or recommended....and perhaps a DIY sheet to bomb-proof packaging. Russman was my teacher....who learned from George Grand, the Yoda of CP. F1Nut is another member who packages like he's shipping rare artifacts.

I agree with a guide of some sort. I tend to just wrap the hell out of everything with bubble wrap and have never had a problem, but that tends to get expensive and is probably not the most effective use of materials...

I rarely buy actual packing material as I recycle and gather things throughout the year from work, my wife's purchases and just stuff I find laying around. You would be surprised at how many small pieces of usable packing you can find handy and I save everything.

Even old, smaller than needed boxes should be saved to breakdown and use for the double boxing trick.

Another thing I like to use religiously when I ship is stretch wrap. You can buy this at Staples or Office Depot for about $10, and it will last you a good while. After cleaning the unit up and doing my CAIG routine, I wrap the unit with this stuff. It prevents any small scratches, rubs, knob jams, RCA jack issues, screw loss, etc etc and gives the buyer a freshly wrapped product. it keeps new dirt and moisture out as well.

Anyone who has bought used gear from me knows this stuff well since it's a trademark for me.
