Hard to believe that anybody would reply to that one... Sad thing is, these types of scams must work, because they've been around for so long.

Nothing shocks me anymore when it comes to scammers. Back in the 70's, my mother was getting letters from somewhere like Bolivia, claiming they had found the cure for cancer. All she needed to do was sign over pretty much everything she owned and they would bring her there and give her the "cure"... My mom was dealing with stage three lymphatic cancer at the time.

Not trying to be a ****, but I've been getting almost that exact email since about 6-9 months after the start of the IRAQ war. I was actually suprised it took the 419ers that long to start using that idea, which I guess proves they really are pretty stupid, just very prolific.

As said earlier, if they get 1 response in 10,000, they can do fine given how cheap email is.

Send me the email. I want 5 million dollars if you won't take it! It's from the army base in Iraq, which is a real place, so you know it's legit! In case you didn't know, there's only one army base in Iraq. No more. No less.

why are all the sums of money so absurd? I mean, why is it always 5, 10 or 20 million? I'd think that someone would be more inclined to believe they can get a free 500 bucks than a free 5 million.

Think it came out on 60 Minutes but there were a couple of scams that were similar to the one the OP stated. Thing is, it started out as an online relationship. The couple never met (or maybe met once or twice) at the woman's expense. The guy would gain the woman's complete trust, and from time to time he would ask for money to invest in something or to help 'move a large sum of money' from Iraq or Afghanistan to the States.

Well after several months and after paying out (one paid over $70 grand) they never heard from their partner ever again.

Pretty **** sad but seriously I can't believe people are that gullible.
