GPS Stolen

4:11 Am my door bell rings, waking my wife and I, it's 3 police officers asking me if I own a GPS. Apparently a neighbor saw someone going through cars in my area, called the police, and they caught this neighborhood youth with items from cars in the area.
It was my 18yr old daughters GPS that I have told repeatedly not to leave in her car.....with the car doors UNLOCKED.
I'm thinking about teaching her a lesson by not letting her know that I have her GPS, and seeing how long it takes before she notices it missing. Maybe it's time for her to experience that sick feeling you get when you realize you've been robbed.

What do you think....should I tell her or let her sweat it out???

Let her sweat, she may not even tell you when she figures out it was stolen to avoid the "I told you so".

I'd be pissed that the doorbell didn't wake my daughter at that hour. Let her sweat just for that little item.

    Let her sweat.

The freak out and sinking feeling in her gut will be the best reminder. Moreso than anything you could ever say.

I was told recently that there's a rash of GPS thefts but not for the unit itself but for the home address if its programed into it. I changed mine to a random gas station in town.

Why? Thieves can't find a house to rob without one?

Oh, yeah, jimmydep, find out what neighbor called the police and then find out what their favorite beer is (or whatever. Maybe get him some of the kickass tequila from PF!). Then go buy them a case of it and thank them for having your back. That's a good neighbor to have. Wish I had neighbors like that instead of the douchenozzles I have now.

I didn't mean in this case where the GPS was recovered but other times when its not recovered. They get your address off of the unit wait till your not home and break into your house.

That still don't make any sense. The GPS has no way of knowing if your loaded or not or if your a gun owner. I say 90% are sold for drugs!!

There is absolutely no benefit to that. They steal the GPS to sell it on a place like craigslist or eBay to make some cash. Just like stereo equipment or cellphones. If they want to break in to a house, there are hundreds of millions of them out there to choose from. They don't need your address from a GPS unit to break in. It's not even logical. Anything they can get from a GPS can easily be found at a place like this: http://www.yellowpages.com/ or this: http://www.whitepages.com/ or even just open the damn phonebook. If they want to know how to get there: http://www.mapquest.com/ or http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl or http://maps.yahoo.com/ or http://www.bing.com/maps/?FORM=Z9LH9 or just walk down to that gas station you use as your home address in your GPS and buy a damn map. Hell, just 5 finger discount it since you're already going to be committing crimes.

They don't need the info in your cellphone, your GPS, your beeper, your stereo or anything else to rob you blind. Nobody stole my phone, GPS or stereo and my house still got broken in to and ransacked this time last year. Besides, why steal your GPS or cellphone or stereo and then GO TO YOUR HOUSE where there is a much greater chance of getting caught or even dead? It's ALMOST as bad as going back to the scene of the first crime and bragging about it.

    You make no sense.

Or they just grab you insurance card or registration while rummaging through your car. I'd be more worried about the garage door opener.
And that would only be a short window of use, since most would re-program.
NOTE: the exception is airport parking. I pull all that crap out before
parking there. Front comes off the stereo and left home, no remote, no
    nothing.

I don't even park at the airport. I either bum a ride from someone or take a cab. The cost of the cab ride is far cheaper than the cost of getting ripped off in long term parking.

THANK you. Such a common argument and it makes ZERO sense. Knowing where "you" live is irrelevant to a thief, because every house has "someone" living in it that they can rob, why would they care about you in particular, and need to "find" you/

Unless they steal your garage door opener too. Then that info comes in handy as most people dont lock the door inside their garage.

In that case, they could get your address from anywhere. Your registration is somewhere in your car too. Gonna take that with you every time?

    Yes...but....

    1. It takes 2 seconds to steal a GPS and garage door opener...you dont even have to open the door...as opposed spending a minute or two looking through various locations for an insurance card.

    2. Your registration doesnt allow you to get in the house.

    3. I can sell a GPS, can't sell an insurance card.

    4. My insurance card doesn't give you turn by turn directions to my house...which might or might not buy a thief some time. They could have a phone with GPS and your address on your registration...but see previous reasons.

All I'm saying is that there are times where having the info on your GPS can hurt you. Would that prevent me from not putting the info in my GPS? No. But I also have GPS on my phone that goes with me everywhere and built in navigation in my radio so I dont have a need for a windshield mounted one.

If my child left their GPS on the windshield...they would get it taken away for the simple fact that its asking for someone to break in.

I would think it would be EXTREMELY simple to have something inside the GPS to where if it was stolen, you could track it online...but thats another story.
