Getting the most out of new DB 651's

I have a Polaris RZR and installed a pair of DB 651's in an overhead box I constructed. They are being run off of a Jensen MSR 2107 head unit which claims 50W per channel.
They sound okay a lower levels, but as I turn them up, they start to sound pretty bad.
Do I need an amp?
