Tube amp with these speakers?
Hi all -
Something came up locally and I am looking for feedback. I know power isn't everything, especially with tubes. Wright Audio Mono 8's came up locally. They are, I believe, 8 watts per channel. I am currently using a Dynaco ST-70 which is more. Now...my speakers aren't known for being particularly efficient - the Sony SS-M7s. Sensitivity is 85db I believe. I am curious what people think of the pairing. I know Wright is a great name in the tube amp industry. I read some online about them, and didn't understand it all. Any comments would be helpful! Thanks, and goodnight.

That Dynaco is a sweet piece. The Wrights would be better paired with a more efficient speaker.-Kevin

A demo is obviously the best way to go with questionable component matching, but 300B amps usually aren't enough for 85db speakers; especially depending on how you listen to them.

I doubt very much you'll be happy using an 8wpc amp with 85dB speakers. I have a pair of 87dB speakers which are small bookies and neither of my tube amps drive them with any authority or volume. Amp number 1 is 15 wpc hybrid tube amp. Amp 2 is a 12 wpc push/pull 6V6 based amp and Amp 3 is an EL 34 based single ended pentode. All 3 run my 5B's at 91dB efficiency with authority just not a huge amount of volume and this is in a smaller 2nd bedroom I use as an office.
I'd pass if you were going to use those solely with the Sony speakers

I would get it because then I could get some more speakers to use with it.
Tubes Rule.

I was going to suggest that too! An inexpensive pair of modded 5B's would blow your socks off.

With your current speaks, no go.
That said though, with the right speakers.....that could be a very cool thing.

The speakers aren't going anywhere, and I don't have the dough to fork over for a second system...thanks for the advice!
