i live in a relatively large neighborhood, lots of younger kids playing in the streets, etc. well, lately we've had a SERIOUS problem of people speeding through the neighborhood. the posted speed limit is 20mph, and atleast 5 times a day i see people spinning tires, acting like the corners are an auto-x course for their trailblazers, and people driving well above the posted speed limit (easily doing 30+). yesterday a child almost got hit, and i was able to get the license plate of the car, and reported it the local police department. they said they'd send someone out, but never did, and honestly i doubt they do ANYTHING about this. there are complaints of people speeding through the neighborhood all the time, and the police simply wont do anything. i have a 3 year old who will eventually be playing with the kids in the streets, not anytime soon, but u know what i mean. all the other kids look up to me, and i even play football in the streets with them when they all get home from school. what would you guys do about these people speeding through the neighborhood? one sunday morning i scared the **** out of a guy threatened to break his jaw etc etc etc for doing well over 50 through here and to call his mom (he was a high schooler). not the best approach, but he drives very slowly and cautiously now lol. what approach would you guys take for this? there are well over 100 houses, and plenty more kids that play in the streets of this neighborhood through the week. any advice is GREATLY appreciated. and lets try to keep this somewhat on topic

Call the PD and ask them why they did not show up. Let them know you plan on documenting everything, and when a child gets hit (unfortunately) you will certainly bring up the fact that you reported the problem numerous times, with no response. They are public servants, if they aren't "serving" talk to the supervisor.
See if you can get other parents/neighbors involved, and begin taking license plate numbers and calling the PD every time.
They'll get a car out there.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

Get with your neighbors and talk about going in together on some of those temporary "speed bump" deals ( http://www.parkinglotsupply.com/items.asp?Cc=RTCPL-SB-S05 ). They're actually relatively cheap for what you get.
Of course check with your local PD on whether or not it's illegal to put them down. If it's legal, these would be a quick, cheap, and effective way to get people to slow down. Put them at each end of the street (or wherever), and watch people either slow down or cause damage to their cars.
Either way, you're happier.

haha yeah when i get on a rant, i tend to forget u can use paragraphs, im sorry. i've talked to a few neighbors now, and they all agree on something being done about this very very soon. im going to the police department tomorrow first thing and lighting a fire under their asses. unfortunately this town (suburb of Indianapolis) doesnt have a huge police department, and its outside IMPD's area. so im figuring some civilian justice may have to take place.

i would have done the same thing about wanting to break someone jaw.mole' -
in the case of me threatening to break the guys jaw, i heard him in his firebird take off down the street, chirp second gear, chirp third gear, all the time only letting out to shift. had he not seen me on the side of the street telling him to slow down, i would have had one hell of a lawsuit brought on him. again, every bit of 50mph. it was 11am on a sunday. i couldnt believe what i was seeing and hearing from this moron as he was doing this.

Get yourself a used baby stroller, nothing expensive (maybe find one at a yard sale). Wait for one of the speeders to come down your street and as they approach push the empty stroller out in front of them.
Or if you don't want to get that drastic a simple basketball or soccer ball will do it. Anything coming out on the street that makes the brain think "Oh crap, there's a kid in there" or "there's gonna be a kid coming after that". This should make them think twice about speeding. And if they hit it then hopefully they have a heart attack or at least get some damage. -
i have a yellow medicine ball... didnt even think about that. a medicine ball will destroy someones bumper at 40mph, heh. great idea. im also looking into dropping some of my own hard earned money on a bunch of these...

I was at my brothers house once and he has the same problem. I was in his yard raking leaves or something and I heard this kid come flying down the street. As he got closer to the house I threw the rake in the street, which made him slow down considerably. He got the message as I gave him a death stare.
Anything you can do to make them uncomfortable or think twice. How about going out there with a camcorder and just film them, or even pretend to film them.
Good luck. -
We have the same problem in our neighborhood. all of the side streets have speed bumps which the HOA is against for "aesthetic reasons" and because our road is an emergency route. My wife bought a yellow "kids are playing" sign and that seems to help. But you get your usual jackass speeding and making an **** out of themselves. I typically yell slow down and they immediately put the brakes on. Unfortunately, in a lot of these cases, things don't change until someone does get hit or something bad happens.Shawn

I worked in the Indiana Senate for a while and I know people would call asking their senator for help regarding town matters such as this. You should call your Senator and House Rep. to get support. Most of the good ones will take this seriously. In fact if you feel like it, PM your name, information and the street in need of a solution. I know a guy . . .
It is always best to attack issues like this from many fronts. -

I like the baby stroller idea!Vinyl, the final frontier...

I have used the ball thrown in the street tactic. It works for a time but it needs to be repeated. We now have regular police cruisers come down the street since most of us complained.
I gave them License plate #'s makes and models of the cars and descriptions of the drivers if I could.
I think there were some finds handed out cause I either don't see the offenders or if I do they go nice and slow.
Took some work though. -
If you damage someones property or even worse, cause an accident, buy throwing something in the street, you will be accountable for your actions. These are not good ideas, though I tend to agree with them!!If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

i got home at about 1030 last night from shooting some pool with a few friends, and as soon as i step out of the truck, i hear someone spinning tires and driving like a total bag of f*ck. i decided to grab the butt section of my pool cue real quick, go to the street with my LED light, and actually pulled his **** over lol. i didnt let him say a word, i basically told him to slow down or he will have to have a mcdermott butt section surgically removed from his own butt. ugh, time to get some lunch and go see what GPD and the city wanna do about this.

I agree it isn't a good idea, but I also don't want a child to get run over when they chase a ball into the street.
I used a ball since I could have been playing with it? The stroller idea is another matter altogether. That is to blatant for me.. -

Simple solution. If you are "FRIENDLY" with your immediate neighbors, start parking your cars in the streets preferably across from one another. This creates the obstacles big enough to make any knucklehead behind the wheel slow down in those areas.Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!!

I had the same problem I stopped a couple of the cars and asked the driver if he would feel so hot if he hit my 7yr old son that I was playing with in the yard at the time. they all apolgised and always drive slow and wave when they see me... ohh forgot to mention we was playing ball and I had a baseball bat in my hand when I stopped them lol
