Polk speakers connecting to Yamaha HTR5940 receiver

I recently bought Polk Audio speaker set to replace my old/custom made speaker set. These are what I bought: Pair of Monitor series 40 for fronts, CS10 center, pair of OWM3 rear surround, and a PSW505 powered subwoofer. I ran wiring to all speakers yesterday into Yamaha HTR5940 receiver (it's about a couple of years old). I hooked up PSW505's 'LFE in (unfiltered)' to receiver 'subwoofer output' through a single subwoofer interconnect cable - Monster MC400SW4M. The subwoofer was set to 'auto' and volume at about 50% (that's how it was when I opened the box and didn't change).
First time I turned it on, it sounded great initially. However, just a minute or so after (I was raising volume from receiver at this time), the receiver turned itself off. When I turned the receiver back on, I read the message on it saying "check your speaker wiring". I went through each and every speaker wiring carefully and made sure it was okay. I noticed that when I touched the subwoofer output with the cable end (I had the receiver turned off but powered; and subwoofer turned on at that time), I heard the speaker jump - I assume this is normal. Anyway, as part of troubleshooting, I disconnected the subwoofer and just played with the remaining speakers for sometime and there was no issue.
I am hoping someone could help me here. Is my receiver inadequate for this powered subwoofer? Or am I doing something wrong with the speaker wiring (I just used single subwoofer interconnect cable)? I didn't want to mess with it again without hearing some expert opinion. Thanks much.

Sounds like a bad sub cable. Your AVR sends an unamplified signal via the sub out so the AVR power is not the issue.

I tried the following cable I bought from Amazon: Monster Standard THX-Certified Subwoofer Interconnect Cable (16 Ft) for only $17 (the previous cable, which seems faulty now, was also a Monster MC400SW4M, I bought from HHGREGG for $40). The new cable from Amazon is working fine now.
I also noticed that the LED light glew "Green" now. I remember that LED turned "Red" when I was having issues previously. I tried to see if this is a coincidence or true in the manual. However, like other PolkAudio speaker manuals - the manual was very vague and it seems like Polk Audio manual writers target audiophiles not the less experienced ones.
Anyway...thanks for the suggestion Ken. Problem seems solved now.****************
