Have you heard of Pixie Lott? She does some covers and writes her own stuff too. Worth checking out if you're looking for a female singer.

I always go back and forth between the following, but if it comes down to it I'd go with the former of the two:

    Fiona Apple
    Tori Amos

P.S. And Fiona is rumored to be releasing a new album in Spring 2011 (which means its just about on track for her pattern of releasing one album every five years...but it should be great).

I have been listening to Sarah McLachlan. I picked up 3 of her earlier albums on Classic records 200 gram vinyl and they sound fantastic.
Her recent release, "Laws of Illusion" is pretty good.

I absolutely love Mazzy Star. By the way, that's the name of the band. The lead singer is Hope Sandoval:smile: Nothing like throwing in So Tonight That I May See into the cd player late at night. "Hauntingly beautiful" is the only way to describe that album. Plus... chicks love it.

I'd also like to add Polly Jean Harvey from PJ Harvey to the mix. Sexy, sexy stuff.

Two favs are Patty Griffin and Shelby Lynne. Incredible songwriters, fantastic voices, and generally very well recorded albums (especially Shelby Lynne). I think that Patty Griffin is one of the best songwriters period, man or woman. 1000 Kisses is a great place to start.

Tori Amos and PJ Harvey are my 2 favorite female artists by a long shot.

The chick from Massive Attack has a good voice as well; as does the chick from Thievery Corporation.

Natalie Merchant is very nice to listen to. I bought her new album about a month ago (Leave Your Sleep, get the 2CD version) and it is worth buying. Have a listen to it. Not necessarily my favorite female artist, but very nice to listen to!

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Sorry... I know I am in the VAST minority when it comes to Bjork, but I absolutely love her body of work. Whether or not her voice is your cup of tea, it's extremely hard to deny her unbelievable talent. Reference her album Medulla. No instruments (though you would swear there were many). Everything is completely a capella. Everything. And though I find it to fall a bit short of its ambition, it's clear that she certainly has an abundance of talent.

Seriously... I know she's an any target due to her numerous eccentricities. But I think most people simply take aim because it's what everyone else is doing. Give Vespertine a spin and try to call her a hack. Once doing so... go search for someone, anyone that can manage to create those vocals and express that sort of range with so much creativity.
