Someone near me is trying hard to sell a pair of S6's....I know nothing about this line of Polks, but I am trying to get in some smaller speakers for some of my bigger monitors.

How do these compare, say to a Monitor 5 or 7? Thanks.

I saw those, Mike. Pretty nice price, but like you, I have never heard any of the S series. I would think they should sound at least as good as the Monitors. I remember them getting nice reviews in the audio press.

The owner, who did not sound real knowledgeable, referred to them as having foam surrounds....I will double check the Polk page, which they have for these speakers. I would think they would be rubber. I think I will pick them up out of curiosity and for some variety.

AGAIN, ANYONE THIS OR OTHERS IN THE THIS S SERIES?

The S6 is just a tad shorter than the 5, about the same width and not as deep. Shows a real deep end for a small speaker....I need tofind the specs for my PSB 300....probably not that low.

Paul, I will try to pick up and you can get over and listen to them.

I believe that cabinet construction is considered a weak point in the S series.

Link to specs and manual pdf:

    Price isn't bad!

I have a pair of S8. They sound surprisingly good. The build quality is below the norm for Polk however. If they are cheap give them a try.

S6? I am listening to a pair now and they really shine with older Tim Buckley of Antony and the Johnsons. But . . . Frankly, the Polk Monitor 7 is hard to beat. With a good analogue source and Dynaco Stereo 70, it is among my favorite speakers in terms of musical enjoyment. I have heard lots of newer and more expensive loudspeakers from Polk including the bargain S6. As a rule they are all nice, something along the lines of the better Boston Acoustics. But only the original Monitor 7 is in the same league as the best Mirage and Design Acoustics vintage models. Let's be clear. S6 are fine, smooth, enjoyable, a bit restrained and understated. Bass is not bloated. And sounds a bit more natural than the Monitor 7. But S6 have little magic in them. Nothing really stands out as incredible the way that a really great speaker will just stun you from time to time. With great virtues one often also get great flaws. Polk S6 have neither.

I have a pair of S6 (cap upgrade), Monitor 5A (Peerless) and Monitor 5B (RD0194 upgrade, XO upgrade). MitchLee describes them well. The S6 build quality is sub-par compared to the Monitors that they replaced but they are a nice pleasant sounding speaker, nothing exaggerated. Between the Monitor 5B and the S6 soundwise, I have a hard time determining which I prefer. The Monitor has more of the classic Polk sound and the S6 slightly more refined.

By the way, the surrounds on the S series are rubber, not foam.
