Thermostat install

So I screwed up. I took out my old thermostat without labeling the wires because I memorized where the wires went on the old one, but then I got a call and couldn't remember...haha. Lesson learned.

Now I'm thinking its not installed correctly. The AC comes on...but sometimes I'll come home at lunch and its set to 84, the inside temperature will be 81, and the air is going but the AC isnt on.

I'm also not convinced the heater is working correctly.

Can someone help me out with this?

Here's a picture I took. House was built in 05 and I live in texas so nothing special as far as heating goes. Heater is gas if that makes a difference.

I tried to find a 'how to test what wires are what' tutorial somewhere but can't find one...so if someone can help me out, that'd be great.

Here's a picture of the newly installed thermostat

Thanks!

This looks like a base for a Honeywell programmable. IF that's the case, then it sounds like you didn't set it up in program correctly. Any chance you kept the owners manual?
If not, then google 'Honeywell thermostats', and look from there, under 'support'. You will need the thermostat model number, which should be either on the base, or on the back of the t-stat.

It is a honeywell. I didnt read the directions in the manual because everyone said it was so easy...and when I went through it, it was really easy.

Maybe I missed something. I was smart enough to keep the manual. Wasn't smart to read it though. I just figured if the air is coming on but the ac isnt running, something is wrong with my wiring.

I also think I'm supposed to have an "auto" setting for the system, meaning it'll change from heat to cool on its own, but it doesnt list it and in the notes it says it may not appear depending on how the thermostat was installed.

What's the m#? I may have to download the manual, and see what the settings should be vs. what you have. I'm not saying it is wrong, but you may have missed a step.
You may have something wrong with the system, but if I can save someone some $$$, I'd like to.

The model is the honeywell rth7600.

The original was just a generic carrier one to go with our carrier ac outside.

You should be able to find the manual on Honeywell's website. It should have a schematic for wiring a Honeywell thermostat to a Carrier unit in the manual. Mine did.

There are 2 manuals that came with this. One (install) covers the installation of the wiring, and also, the initial set-up, which covers whether your system is gas, hp, or electric. I don't know how they come from the factory, but you might have to go back to this step, which is before the owners manual/ programming manual.
I've got both manuals cued up, so let meknow if you need help with one or the other.

Also, the wiring appears to be good, so, I'm ignoring that for now.

Everything seems to be working fine now. Not 100% sure why the fan would be on sometimes when the actual ac wouldnt be on...but it hasnt done that since.

I called honeywell and it was just a programming issue on the auto heat to cool option. Hit a button, hold 2 buttons down, hit the up button a few times until I got to a certain number...

I looked again and didnt see anything like that in the manual, so not sure whats up with that...but it works great now.

I'm glad it worked out. It sounded like a programming issue, based on the wiring looking good. Ofcourse, that only works if the same person wires in BOTH the unit and the thermostat.:rolleyes:
