Windows issue

I've been running out of HD space on my primary, and it shows my Windows folder is 18 gigs running xp  . All temp files are deleted, so it isn't that. I downloaded Windows updates today (I always do it manually rather than automatically because I hate it when I have something I'm working on while out of the office and it restarts the computer forcing me to start over ), could that have something to do with it? I'm wondering if a lot of that 18g is just bloat that can be deleted. Any ideas?

How big is the primary drive. I have a 80 SSD as a primary and am using about 30gbs of it with Windows 7. You could run CCleaner on it as it should rid of some stuff and recover some drive space.

The Primary is 40g. I chose a small primary so that I could keep programs on one drive, and media on another, and not be tempted to just download crap to my primary. I just want to keep it clean.

XP min requirements for HD space is 1.5g

    Windows 7 requires 16g min

Are you running Office or anything like that off your main drive or Itunes? If so check the size of the PST or Itunes media folder respectively. I had that problem once with both of those. A formatted 40gb drive probably leaves you with 32gb or so space. Not really that much these days. Here's a good HDD for cheap, I use the 1tb in my rig for a media drive as you have yours setup. If you want really fast consider SSD.

Yeah, good advice, and I will go that route, but probably not for 6 months or so.
I also discovered the source of the bloat. It's the Installer folder (C:\Windows\Installer), 13 gigs in that b*tch!!

Formatted, my HD allows 33.8g out of 40. Not much I know, windows 7 wants 16g all to itself (I run xp, but have 7 in case I have to upgrade).

I also cleaned up my Itunes, everything but backups. And yes, office is on this drive. I have about 6g available, but why the hell is my installer folder so big?

Thanks for the HD advice, I'll implement it as soon as I can.

Tell you what Polkie, since your family shoot me a PM. I have a WD2500 sitting near my desk. It's been used but only for a month or two. I benched it a few weeks back and there is no issues with it at all. PM me a shipping address and I'll try to get it out to you before I head back to the US.

The biggest I would go with SSD would be 120-200gb. The rest I would put on a 2nd drive.

Did you get that drive yet? I sent this out last we talked on it. Just wondering if it works for you. Also your PM box is full, which is why I'm bumping your thread.

    try this,
    start \ search \
all files and folders \ specify size (at the bottom "what size is it")
highlight at least (radio button) and type 20000 (20mb)
this will search all files on C:\ that are bigger than 20mb
make sure you are searching details and not tiles
and click the size bar at the top, this will make all the bigger stuff stay on one side
and you can go through and see what you really have, and check to see if anything big
is taking up too much space.
a lot of times when making a dvd, huge temp files are made and if there is a problem and the dvd fails while being made, it will leave these huge temp files on your pc
another way to do it is search and search for *.tmp *.mpg *.avi *.iso *.zip *.rar
a lot of times these files clutter up your hard drive and when you are finished with them
you dont know where to look for em..
my documents is a good place to start
