    Very Interesting Question.
    Seems to be varying opinions...

I did find this person tabulation of his own findings
I'll have to try the same with my Vehicles and see if I get any definitive results

    Rating |Number of Entries|Average MPG
    85.. |173 |17.75
    85.5 |293 |19.73
    87.. |62 |23.8
    88.. |157 |18.89
    89.. |36 |24.16
    91.. |227 |18.32
    92.. |18 |23.09

The unique thing about this specific Toyota engine is that it has what Toyota defines as "VVT-i Variable Valve Timing Technology." This actually allows the engine to sense what the octane allows for and automatically advances/retards the spark.

I've done the testing for the first 2,600 miles and as far as I'm concerned, the more expensive fuel yields a 1:1.0364 return. As 91 octane is 3.64% or less expensive than 87, that's what goes into our tank.

I guess to go full circle, we need to test 93.

How many cents per gallon cheaper than regular 87?

Around here it's around a dollar cheaper a gallon.

Unfortunately, you don't get near the MPG with it. Also unfortunately, if your car isn't set up for it, then you can't realistically run it.

    So it's 30-35% cheaper as in $1.89 gal./$2.89 gal. ??

Does it cut your mileage by a third?

I can usually find it around here for around $2/gallon.

I run 93 octane in all my cars except the Jeep, though, so E85 would be a dollar or more cheaper.

And yes... you could expect your mileage to drop by a third. I wouldn't suggest trying it on your Toyota. I don't think your injectors are large enough, nor is your ECU capable of running the different A/F ratios that E85 presents.

I've been half-**** putting together a setup to run E85 on my Mazda, but that's more for the higher octane and cooling properties of E85, which would enable me to run more boost for not much of a monetary hit. E85 is cheap street legal race fuel.

Yeah, I don't think I would us it in the Avalon.

My point is, if it costs 33.0% less, but your mileage drops 33.1%, stick with the $3.00 Stuff!

I'd be surprised if i got more than 4mpg under boost, anyways.

It's a different scenario for me. I could likely see 50 more horsepower going to E85, with minimal cost difference, that's what i'm looking at.

But you are correct. Don't use it in the Avalon. You'd have to get a standalone engine management system, and that 1mz (i think that's what's in there, either that or a 3mz) isn't the easiest thing in the world to tune. You could easily spend $2000 getting your car to run correctly on E85. Even IF you saw a dollar/mile ratio decrease, it would take years to offset that cost.

Where I live it is an extra $2 at the pump to fill up on 89, and extra $3 to fill up on 91. So I run 89, just because I get lest spark knock with 89 than I do with 87. I will run every other week at 91, during the summer I run 87 though.....
I could care less about MPG or anything like that.
