You know those nasty grates with baked on krud!!!! Forget all that scrubbing, scrubbing & more scrubbing...only to get them looking semi-clean. Simply put a grate in a ziploc bag, add 1/4-1/2 cup ammonia, seal it up & let sit for a few hours, over night is even better. Whallah!!!! as pretty as brand new. Now those real nasty ones might need a brillo pad to touch it up but trust me the stuff literally melts away. Something about the gas from the ammonia is what does the trick. Not being a scientist I'm not sure how it works but I could care less...it just works!!!!!

I stick my Cast Iron grates in the dishwasher, cleans them up real nice, and no scrubbing.

Are you talking about a gas range or a grill? I have this problem with my gas range in the kitchen.

Cast iron is a whole different animal. I'm referring to porcelain finishes (at least I think it's porcelain).

You'll be very happy with the results. Try to let them sit over night if possible for best results. Also put them either outside or in the garage just in case the ziploc bag leaks. I never had that problem but there's always a first time.
