I think there is a link to some of you who have redone cabs on Monitors.....is this even possible on the vinyl covered ones?
I was thinking of faux painting....or whatever that is called....

Hi Niel,
Im in the process of rebuilding a pair of RT 12's with vinyl cabinets.I thought about re spraying the cabinets but found on closer inspection that the paint was actually black ash vinyl.
I have done a bit of hunting around and have found Parts Express sell the same black ash vinyl. They also sell the cherry and other wood grain sheets. If you want to remove the old vinyl you can use a heat gun or hair drier and it will lift ok.Then just give the sides a clean with some paint thinners to remove the old glue. The rest is just slow peel stick and smooth with a rag to remove the bubbles.Finish off the edges with a razor blade and sharpy if you miss a few edges. To re vinyl would cost about $20 plus your time
The other option I was originally thinking about doing was to take the cabinets down to the spray painter and get them to 2 pak the cabinets piano black for a super gloss finish.Would cost around $100
I spoke to a cabinet maker yesterday that does kitchens and he told me he could veener lamanate the cabinets easy using the same type of veneer they use on kitchen bench tops and cupboards. The types of finishes are endless.Would cost around $100
Regards

Neil,
Geoff has done several pairs, mostly he has done Mon 5's. He did a sweet looking piano black pair, that I saw, which were gorgeous and a pair with maple that I only saw pics of, but they look nice as well.
I thin he has threads post on here about them. -

Way too cheap for either option.Political Correctness'.........defined

I recall a thread a while back where Trey veneered his rt55i's. You might want to ask him if that's the way you want to go."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Benjamin Franklin, February 17th, 1775.

Interesting thread. I want to pick up a used 5JR+ through craigslist to use a center channel and it's in cherry. My original set are black ash. There are some spray paints out there that chemically bond to plastic. Has anyone actually successfully spraypainted a vinyl cabinet to change the color? I really don't want to go through the effort of stripping and cutting vinyl sheets.

I have a pair of monitor 7s that are very ugly wood grained vinyl and I'm thinking about spray painting them. Rust Oleum makes a "vinyl" spray paint that is supposed to contain vinyl and they claim it will adhere to any vinyl surface. They even claim it can be used on dashboards and seats. I don't know if the vinyl on speakers is the same chemical composition but I'm going to buy a can today and try it. Black. If I do I'' post the results.TO ERR IS HUMAN. TO FORGIVE IS CANINE.
